My midwife didn't specifically tell me about the NHS antenatal classes that were available - she just said that there was a leaflet in the bounty pack she'd given me. We decided to go for NCT ones as they were in the evenings rather than on Saturdays when Moon works, but I didn't realise they also had a couple of evening classes. Luckily when I managed to find them online, I booked an active water birth class which is combined with a tour of the hospital, but even trying to find the classes on the website was tricky. A lot of the people at my NCT class didn't book early enough and couldn't get onto any of them. Midwife hasn't even mentioned a birth plan to me either.
I didn't have a birth plan although when I was admitted the midwives asked me what I'd like (and respected that).
TBH, birth plans are a bit pointless because everyone lists the same things. Just make sure you're informed about what pain relief is available and then go with the flow. Staying active is a good idea. I laboured stood up (fat lot of good it did me) but it felt more comfortable than lying down."Growth for growth's sake is the ideology of the cancer cell" - Edward Abbey.0 -
I hate this weather!!!
I am so hot, have ONLY maternity jeans that fit me and nothing I do is cooling me down! HELP!!!!
Fluff- I try not to think about the bit when I'll be walking around with a 6cm gap in my fanny - one of my friends sent me a 'hilarious' guide to dilation. As a rough guide, it went from cheerio to cucumber to can circumference to bagel!!! Needless to say, everyone else found it hilarious... I am still traumatised and can no longer even look at a bagel.
Anyway... day 1 of actual school holidays (ie. OH is at work!) and I have no energy or desire to do anything!
Hope everyone else is coping better than me!

oh Sam that is funny. now i am sure we will think of that too when we see a bagel. haha. amazing how we do manage to squeeze out a baby from down there though!! yep hating the heat too. grrBecame Mrs H on the 1st of October 2011!!

Thanks so much for all the advice and support everyone. The date I have for my induction is when I'm 40 + 12 so I will be nearly 2 weeks over. I have to go for a scan this morning so I think I will ask the nurses in the hospital for advice. I'm really hoping that the second sweep on Saturday works though.
They did tell us about induction in one of the NHS antenatal classes and I have read about it online, but I do think the midwife should have told me properly about the pros and cons instead of just handing me leaflets. I do think it's bad that for some of us the midwives we've had to deal with have not been forthcoming with information. The level/quality of care really does seem to vary. I feel like complaining after I've had my baby but if I have another child in the future I will probably end up seeing this woman again. I wonder if I could complain anonymously? It would make it difficult if she found out who made the complaint.
Anyway I'm trying to remain positive but I have to admit every day that goes by without the baby coming makes it harder. I am totally torn between wanting the baby out by a certain date, and wanting a natural birth. Hopefully I will get some good advice today.
Love to all xx
Hey AMC - I'm also feeling the same as you! Im also keen on having a natural as possible birth - hoping for water and gas air for pain relief.. just need bubba to start making his appearance!! Dont really want the sweep either so big hugs to you from fellow boldie!

Morning all!
I just read, but all I can remember is Fluff's comments on the experienced midwife crocheting and the 6cm gap in your fanny :rotfl: sounds like little Freddie is doing really well. Seems a lot of little boys are super hungry!
Kitten glad mini cub is growing well. Sounds like the staff they're are really supportive.
SM thank you for the info on induction. I'm still feeling the less intervention the better. Seems from reading midwives/drs are very keen in be sticking their fingers in places.
AMC you'll nearly be 42 weeks I guess at some stage they may have to kick start labour. Follow your body's instincts though, good luck for your scan.
Rups I think at your stage I didn't really have a round bump. I I was at that stage where I could have just eaten too many pies. Give it a couple of weeks and you'll look rounder and definitely pregnant
MMM last night we looked at pain relief. They don't give diamorphine here, just pethadine. Earlier on in the labour is ok, but it crosses the placenta so if given in later stages of labour can make the baby drowsy and slower to feed etc. I'm sure she said similar about the morphine, but as I won't be having it i didn't think to remember. Epidurals don't affect the baby.
Chrissy good luck with the nesting. Not the weather for housework really.
Savage re: c sect and feeding. I don't know, but my nephew was born by elective section. The moment he was out he was trying to suck on the blanket and fed very easily. I'm sure my thighs have got flabbier, I think prob I'm not walking so much.
In our birthing unit you can pethadine and gas and air. The midwife at the class backed up what the consultant said that even most high risk women can start in the midwife led bit so hopefully I can chill down there for a bit
Has anyone heard from SillyMoo?
Oh OH has just arrived home for lunch to surprise meI though he was a robber though so lucky I didn't hit him a stick!
Hope you all manage to stay cool-ish. Sorry if I missed anyone. Hugs to those who need them. sending big labour vibes to the boldies xx:j Baby boy arrived 22nd August 2012 :j

Im waiting for a call from my midwife, the doctors surgery is closed for staff training (hopefully to teach the receptionist how to be nice lol) so she is supposed to be coming here, however she said she would ring to let me know what time, as yet not heard a thing, I've even asked the hospital to bleep her, she really is useless.0
