  • Hello all,

Congrats rups can't wait for the birth story so glad you have your lo.

My pains carried on all day I rang the labour ward and midwife said to have a bath so I did and it died down. Had horrible back ache last night :( been for my 31 week app today and baby is lying head down, he was at the 28 week app as well so I'm hoping it might mean he makes an appearance before 40 weeks! But don't think I will be that lucky!

Me and oh went shopping today, got curtains and light shade for nursery and now the carpet is being fitted in a week, it means that we can build the nursery furniture by the end of the month :)

Evening ladies, hope that you're all well.

I have a question for those of you who've had your babies or are second/third timers: how many nappies do you need to start with? and how many breast pads are necessary? Whilst the baby events are on I'm trying to get some in, but I also want to know I have enough so if I'm struggling once baby is here I don't have to pop out to get more it that makes sense.

Hope we've all had a good day

  • Saffa - I got 7 boxes of 60 breast pads when they were on offer at Ocado...I've used precisely 4 pads in 3 weeks! I think it depends how much you leak. one of my friends is very leaky and needed 2-3 per side and changed them every hour or so.

We seemed to go through wipes like no ones business don't quite know what OH does with them! As for Nappies I think we might have had 4 packs of 25 nappies in 3 weeks - something like that anyway. Amazon have Pampers size 1, 74 pack (random number) for £8.34 at the moment making them the cheapest I could find without vouchers.

I also only went through 3 packs of maternity pads so something like 30-40 pads then went to normal towels, my blood loss wasn't as heavy as I imagined it might be but again that varies between people I guess. Good luck :)

PS - If youplan to breast feed stock up on Lanisoh cream and put it on from the first feed and put it on religiously after every feed I'm positive its the only reason my nipples haven't been very sore (yet!) from feeding. Wish I'd have stocked up on that instead of breast pads :D

Breast pads - I got given two boxes of them... still have over half a box left after a month+ of pumping and then letting supply stop. Most of the pad-changes I did weren't from excessive leaking but from the flipping sticky losing its stick and them making a bid for freedom out of the neckline of my top.

Wipes - obviously like a good girl I used cotton wool and water... till the second I got out of the hospital and then stuff that for a game of cricket. I think I used about half a pack of cotton wool in all - and that's including the bit the dog tried to eat. Wipes I used 3-4 a change at a generous estimate (but probably only that many for a real poonami of the sort that happened much later on) - but I stockpile a lot of wipes when they're on special as they're the sort of thing that gets used eventually anyway - even if it's when they're school age and come out covered in god knows what.

Pads I went through 3-4 packs, but any leftovers came in handy for the first period which was incredibly and utterly heavy.

Nappies I think I'd bought 3 packs of size 1 and a couple of packs of size 2 - all got used in time but I used none of them to start with as she came out needing size0/prem size ones! I tended to go through approx one per feed as a general rule (we had to change her nappy to get her awake enough to feed initially) - so probably about 8-9 a day to start with. But be careful with nappies as different brands do and don't suit different babies and the last thing you want is a mountain of ones that leak like crazy on your child so you can't easily use!

Lanisoh I could never stand the feel of - used it to start with then did the rubbing a bit of breastmilk into your nipples trick instead - so used hardly any of it. Granted I was only ever pumping (I now realise on top of the sleepyness, jaundice, prematurity, tiny mouth and massive knockers combination we also had a small tongue tie which I think was enough to tip the balance utterly against us) but that was enough to stop them getting sore even when being cranked up and down the funnel of a breast pump at an eyewatering speed (it's a very disturbing sight to watch if you ever get let loose with a hospital grade breast pump on max setting btw).

Just done stuff like pulling together my big girl's routine and how to make her feeds up and what stuff's kept where all written down for people looking after her if I end up in hospital for a longer stay tonight, and a list of emergency numbers for hubby to ring to try to get hold of my parents when he needs to... keep procrastinating about tackling the hospital bag - I'll probably start that this weekend - although I AM getting organised ridiculously early (I'm only 26 weeks), when I consider having a 33 weeker last time, and the odds of it happening again - I want bags packed and to be essentially sorted by the 30 week mark... and anything after 33 weeks is bonus time basically - rather than planning for week 40 and getting caught short.

I've used nearly 2x27 pack of nappies in a week.
I'm quite milky but have only really had to change my pads 2/3 times a day.
I've used 3 packs of maternity pads (30). Mostly because I was wearing 2 for days! Not for the loss but for the cushioning on my stitches.
No nip cream needed here but I'm using nipple shields which may be why.

Saffagal, do not stock too many, your lo might outgrow them quickly or never even fit in a number one! My lo does not poo at every feed, but more like once a day. We use about 6-7 a day because of this, but if your lo poops often you might easily need about 10 a day during the first few weeks. The first days we needed like 3-4 because the system is trying to get rid of the meconium and your lo barely wees. After your milk comes up, you increase the nappies, then eventually it's supposed you start to have less feeds but with more quantity per feed, then the number of nappies goes down again... but my lo still doesn't know about that, she feeds like 12+ times a day!!!

Register with Amazon family once your lo is born, you get 3 months of free next day delivery plus some discounts. When you reach the third month, you cancel or go ahead with the subscription and pay the fee. I have found it very useful. If you order before lunch, you get the stuff next day and they usually have nappies at a cheaper price thana anyone else. The product has to be "Amazon prime eligible " to get the next day delivery, but so far I found everything I needed had this option. Since I registered, I've bought quite a few bits and pieces like wipes, bottles, teats, baby books, nappies... I find it very convenient that I do not have to go out, I browse whilst my lo eats and all I have to do is open the door to whichever courier brings it. Since.it's next day delivery, I cannot really run out of nappies, unless I order very late!

Baby Kavics used size 1 nappies for 5 weeks, she was 8lb 1oz at birth. We went through 1 small pack in about 4-5 days (had 7 small bags). She has been using size 2 for 3 weeks now and will move her up to size 3. I bought 3 big packs (72 per pack) of size 2, baby kavics uses up to ten a day as she has thrush and needs to be changed more often.

I used 4 packs of maternity pads (boots own, big ones) and 2 packs of the smaller ones plus an additional 2 packs of normal sanitary towels at the end of the bleeding, so 8x10 towels in total.

I had 4 boxes of breast pads and i am using the last one now. I haven't been leaking but my nipples are quite painful and i find the breastpads ease the sensitiveness.

Wipes. I still use cotton pads, huggies dry wipes and water. Because of her thrush this is the best, the wipes make it worst. I will switch though once her thrush clears up. I use one pack of huggies dry wipes (you can only get them in tesco, on offer they are £1 per bag)per week and one bag of large cotton pads in every two-three weeks. Don't bother with cotton balls, buy the large pads (i get the j&j ones from pound shop or the superdrug ones).
  • Hi All,

Hope everyone is well. Just found a deal for nappies on Kiddicare....200 nappies for £19.99 RRP£50 and if you dont use them all you can send back what you have left over in any one size and get a refund.

I thought this might be good to try, i suppose it all depends on if they agree with LO. Link below:

That's an ok deal though you need to spend more to qualify for free delivery. I always make sure that the cost is less than 10p per nappy

They're good - except they don't do size 1. We used them with this baby 90% of the time, but we live within 10 mins drive of a Kiddicare store so don't need to pay the delivery charges. The takeback thing's a bit meh though - basically you get four bags of nappies within the box, they'll refund any unopened bags - but when you consider the cost of postage to send them back you have to decide if it's worth it or not.

At the moment Tesco's 2 packs for £10 deal on their super dry nappies works out as getting more nappies for your £20 than the Kiddicare ones in terms of the bigger sizes (that's for size 4+ since that's what our daughter's in at the moment).

They're about on a par with the supermarket nappies in terms of quality though - just with less silly pictures all over the backside.

Trick is to watch Kiddicare on facebook and they'll plug free delivery weekends - or if you're needing to do things like buy next size up bottle teats or whatever to get you over the free delivery threshold to get them at the same time.

I wouldn't buy a big box of size 1 ones anyway - you just can't anticipate how long you'll be in the teeny tiny sizes - we were in size 0 and 1 for aaaages (the one advantage of having a preemie - you get yer money's worth out of moses baskets and carrycots!), but in size 4 hardly any time as she had a massive growth spurt then and caught up with the size she'd be if she was full-term!
