    Joel's Arrival

Thank you so much for posting - gosh the midwives didnt seem that helpful!! Enjoy Joel :)

Morning all, another restless night - up every 1hr or so for toilet. Keep thinking I must sleep as I'm going to need energy for Wednesday!

Hubby off house hunting today as we're moving ASAP when Walnut is out of hospital. Blimey it's been a busy year - new man, marriage, baby, new job for him and between us this will be our fifth move since Feb!

Happy days all :) Pea x

  • Hiya ladies, huge congrats to all the newborns abd labour vibes to the boldies (if you want them!)

Just mooching around and saw Rups post about induction and thought i'd add my 2 penny's worth!

I'm against induction because like alot of others have said it's un-natural, your body is being forced into something that it's not quite ready to do. I was strapped to a bed with a FH monitor tied around me and the drip stuck in my arm, if I needed the toilet it took about 20 mins to get the monitor detatched and I had to drag the drip along with me, then once I was back had to manouvere around the bed to get the drip in the right place and spend another 20 mins trying to find Kai's heartbeat.

I couldnt move from that bed, Which I think made labour much more painful, all my pain was in my back, I wanted to get on all fours but it was impossible with all the wires.

Towards 3rd stage my mw told me to go to the toilet as sometimes it affects labour when you have a full bladder and I ended up pulling the monitor pads off my belly and mw and hubby had to stand in the bathroom with me to make sure I didnt pull the drip out too.

Another point, as said before, is that once you start it cant stop. I was up to 20ml and the contractions were literally 30 secs apart and mw was dallying around about wether to lower it or not as wasnt fully dilated! Im screaming in pain and shes saying "Juuuust want to see how it goes for 5 minutes" whereas majority of the time, if you're in natural labour, your body does what it needs, when it needs to.

My birth was pretty positive altogether though and when I get prgnant again I will have to be induced again due to OC so if it was that bad I wouldnt be considering another baby!

I did find it was very reassuring that I had a mw with me the whole time though, from 10am until 11pm I was never without a medical help which made me feel a lot better.

All that said sometimes you have to be induced for you and baby's health. I was due to be induced the Monday due to OC, however my waters broke Saturday morning and labour hadnt progressed by Sunday morning so due to risk of infection, I was induced.

As long as everything is fine with you and baby, and you are overdue, you DO have a choice. You can say no to induction, it just means more monitoring. Its your body and your baby!

Sorry for the mammoth post, just wanted to add my bit! X

Blimey CherryDrop thanks for the post - I have to be induced next Wednesday (medical reasons) and I'm not looking forward to it! Hoping baby decides to come naturally on Tuesday, but not sure that will happen!

Gosh - I guess ultimately we have to do what's better for the baby and us.

To add another perspective to the induction issue, I have to say both of my inductions were positive experiences. My eldest arrived via a spontaneous labour, which was a long birth and quite an ordeal. My other two were inductions for medical reasons.

The induction process will vary by hospital. My first one was in Wales at 40 weeks and they went straight for the drip option. I was permanently strapped to monitors as Cherrydrop describes, but for me that wasn't a problem. I had an epidural, so the increased pain wasn't bothering me. I had attention, and the whole thing was over and done with in a couple of hours, which for me was a plus point. It meant I wasn't exhausted from a long labour, I recovered far faster and bonded quicker with baby as I was a lot more alert.

My second induction (11 weeks ago), was an even better experience. It was at 39 weeks and at this hospital they used the pessary option. The process was insert pessary and leave for 24 hours, if no success then have a second attempt with another pessary and if there was still no success after that it was only then that they would move on and use the drip. In my case the first pessary worked, so it was all very quick. This time I was only on the monitor for 20 minutes after the pessary was inserted, just to check it didn't upset baby, and then told to spend the day walking the hospital grounds. I was hooked up again once my waters had gone for a quick check on bubba and that was it for monitoring (the useless machine didn't pick up my contractions anyway!). I was only in advanced labour for 49 minutes, and if it wasn't for my own medical history I could have been completely mobile throughout. Recovery was fast, I was up and walking straightaway, and felt good.

I know a lot of people don't agree with induction and there are some horror stories, but personally if I ever had another baby I would prefer induction to natural labour. My main advice would be to make sure you find out in advance which process your hospital uses so you can be prepared. If they do the pessaries first it could be potentially be 3 or 4 days before baby arrives, if they go straight for the drip it should be fast but more painful.

    Good luck for Wednesday MushyPeas!

The first mw probably meant well but didn't seem to listen to everything I was saying to her. Felt bad about 'kicking' her at the time but now, I think she deserved it. She never came back to see how I was. The student mw and the doc were both lovely, plus the mw who took over when the shifts changed and sewed me up - lovely lady too.

Hope everyone has a lovely weekend. Best wishes to all :)

    hello all.. :)

thanks for posting your birth story. am going to read itnow :)

thanks also ladies for your views on inductions. I am sure everything has its pros and cons.. i would obv prefer everything natural so just keeping options sort of open. .we havent had a tour of the hospital so was wondering whether to just drag dh there and ring them to see if we go see the birth pool etc? hmm

had another weird nights sleep as cant breathe and now have developed a cough which sounds like a smokers cough, and runny nose. just want this cold over and done with now... 9 days till due date for me.. my little pumpkin is moving inside me :)

hope everone has a lovely day and will pop back later. xx

KatyLiz thanks for adding your induction story, it really helps getting the different perspectives. I've read the NICE guidelines and know it can be more difficult - but at least I know when baby is (sort of) coming - though it could come earlier the size I am now!

I'll be going through pessary first, then on to drip from what they've said. I won't be leaving the hospital, but will try and keep moving as much as SPD lets me. I think it's going to be a long few days!

Been reading up today about the NICU Walnut will go into once born, few tears because it's a bit scary but at least we're prepared and know to expect it. Must be more of a shock going into premature labour and then baby being sent there.

Rups32 hope that cold is sorting itself out.

DH on his way home now, sounds like he's found us somewhere to live :T I won't know ANYONE where we move to - but luckily I'll have a little one as an excuse to go and join lots of baby clubs!

wow you birth story mlbarrett. amazing that you actually managed to stay that long without going to the hospital. I am so glad you have your little bubba though. Good you kicked that mw. hehe..

am struggling today. Have managed to finish wraping up presents for DH's family. phew but today when i woke up, i felt a weird presurre down there still and my right side of the groin/pelvic area hurts.:( i am walking very slowly. :( i feel tired now too and fancy a nap. .wonder if the couch will be comfy? we have carols to go to later at a local pub. hope i can manage to sit there for a bit. lol now my back is going too. Sitting on the gym ball is making it no better.

felt a bit silly earlier as had asked dh to get my some lemon in his way back from kung fu. he completely ignored me and said we had enough in the fridge and i know we are running out as i use some everyday for my cold, so i had a meltdown and am now tired from that. he got annoyed with me being 'irrational' and i was just crying. oops.. maybe a nap would be good.
