After reading the James Bonds books where he's always smooth; suave and good looking. I can't understand why they never chose me for the film.

Maybe your phone was engaged that day? Try to be strong, you'll get over it.

Tom cruise in war of the worlds! in fact, everything about that film! The character is supposed to be intellectual, and reticent...oh my days.

Also didn't rate mos def as ford prefect.

Anne Hathaway in one day, anyone? Worst Yorkshire accent ever. The funniest/most touching bits in the book are about her struggle with her weight, being ginger and the class divide between her and the male lead. Instead they cast a beautiful slim dark haired American who does RP english interspersed with the ocassional hammed up 'on't bus'.

I agree he is totally wrong for the part, I prefer not to see films if I've read the book as they rarely live u to my expectations.
I started reading Stephing King as a teenager and still have them all, my son has also read them at around the same age and added to the collection.
I'm a Harlan Coben fan as well as Lee Child but my currrent favourite is Linwood Barclay.

I'm also gutted about Tom Cruise being Jack Reacher as he is 20 years too old and 18" too short. The books have a page at the start that states height, weight, build etc. I always have more of a Hugh Jackman or Vin Diesel stature but no fixed perception of the face.

Have any of you read any Stuart Macbride books, the main character in them is Logan McRae and they are all set in Aberdeen. They are fab!

For anyone who is a fan of crime writers, Dundee Uni are running a competition to build a new morgue and have roped in some of the best crime writers to support it. There are also competitions to meet the authors and an auction where you can feature in your favourite authors book http://www.millionforamorgue.com/ It might give you some additional ideas for new reads.

TC is far too short to be Reacher - someone earlier mentions TC is 5'7" and Reacher is around 6'5" isn't he?

Not sure who I imagined would be Reacher but it certainly wouldn't be TC.

Off now to google which book/film it is...

As soon as I saw the thread title I thought of TC and JR. It's very wrong. Was just saying to my OH the other day about it too, he has no clue who JR is, so just sort of nodded.

I've recently read at least a dozen 'Jack Reacher' books back to back (main character in books by Lee Child) and I had formed a mental picture of the character.

I'm gutted to discover there is now a 'Jack Reacher' movie and the character is played by.........Tom Cruise. :(

I've nothing against Tom Cruise and I like him in other films but he's too 'pretty' and just not rough enough and 'square jaw' enough to be the character in this one.

He's also not tall enough. I bet there will be loads of camera shots taken from low down to make him look taller.

Have you ever not been able to fully reconcile an actor with the character they play?

I read the thread title and before opening it, I thought "well I'm really enjoying the Jack Reacher books at the moment, and Tom Cruise is RIDICULOUSLY cast! Reacher is 6ft 3ins and built like a brick outhouse, and although I have no idea how tall TC is, I know he's nowhere near that!

I grinned when I read the first line of your OP!

Also wondering why they are making the eighth(?) book in the series into a movie and not one of the earlier ones?
