    Stephen Tompkinson as DCI Banks....

    WRONG, WRONG, WRONG!

But not as wrong as John Hannah as Rebus!

Once they cast Ken Stott - what a difference!

Well I reckon if he can pull off a 6'5 beefcake he can pull off a 6'5 beanpole :).

Oops. That may not be the best choice of phrases ;).

Edit: Re Ken Stott. I thought he WAS Rebus, not just acting him :) Am sure I read my 1st book before seeing him, that's exactly how I pictured him.

Shopaholic. Loved the books- eccentric English character. The movie destroyed it- moved it to america and then cast some awful actress who was not even American and just wasn't becky the character. Didnt physically match her but also was so wooden.

Tom Cruise - what a miscast (in my opinion). I love the Jack Reacher books and in my mind he was a Chuck Norris type definitely not TC:( Just seens someone's suggestion of Vin Diesel - now that's more what I was thinking. Jack Reacher's definitely not a "pretty boy" but he does strike me as being all rippling muscle. Come to think of it Hollywood doesn't have as many "action men" as they used to - Bruce Willis, Sylvester Stallone, Stephen Seagal, Jean Claude Van Damme etc etc - I'm really showing my age now!

It's amazing how you can form a picture in your mind, then be so let down my the movie. I had read the Philip Pullman trilogy and had a clear vision which so didn't match with the Golden Compass film. I'm not knocking the movie but it just didn't do it for me at all.
The Bridges of Madison Country was another which I didn't get - I think both Meryl Streep and Clint Eastwood are amazing but the film didn't have the same effect on me as the book. The book made me cry buckets, the film didn't move me much at all.

Now the most accurate casting I've seen was definitely Marley and me -having read the book first Marley was just as I expected him to be:D

Stuart MacBride's books are great, pretty graphic. I also like, among lots of other authors, Peter James. The lead characters in both books are brilliant.
  • For me Morgan Freeman was totally miscast in Kiss the girls, whenever I read one of the Alex Cross books I always imagine him to look like Denzil Washington.

In terms of tv programmes it took 2 series of Bones before I could watch it as they had changed the characters completely from the books. In the end I pretended it was just a coincidence that both lead characters were called Temperance.

Also most of the Discworld adaptations have been wrong, don't even get me started on David Jason's involvement.

I too have discovered the Reacher novels on my kindle and absolutely love them.
    Just starting book 8 now.
I couldn't really see Tom Cruise as Reacher, and on viewing the recently released trailer, it is really obvious just how ridiculous this casting is. I won't be watching. Hopefully it'll be a flop and then they can get a real actor in to play it - I mean Cruise is 15yrs too old and far too small for the role.

Someone's already said it, but I recently recommended the books to a friend with a description of Reacher as "a human version of the littlest hobo" - pretty accurate I think :D

Would a book group/ club/ thread be allowed on this section of the forum? I'd really enjoy it if it was - always looking for new books to read and do enjoy talking about them.

Oh I do hope so. Count me in if one is set up

Going slightly off the topic of poor casting but I HATE when films change the plot of the book. I do expect some inconsistencies as it can't always be the way I imagined but My Sister's Keeper was AWFUL. I cannot believe how they butchered the ending!

Butchered? I thought they completely changed the ending which is one reason I didn't go and see it.

In fact, whilst I understand the need for a 'name' in a film, sometimes the person in the film is so famous that I can't see the character that they are supposed to be playing.....and in any case I can't think of one book I've really enjoyed that has been successful made into a film - they always seem to botch it up.

Having said that I once read a book called the Miracle Strain and couldn't help thinking Harrison Ford was made for the part of the hero and that the woman from the BBC tv series Bugs was made for his sidekick.

When reading the Harry Potter books to my eldest, I envisioned Prof Sprout as being the actor Imelda Staunton, and Dolores Umbridge as portrayed by Miriam Margoyles.

In the films those actors played the opposing roles. Though I still think Miriam Margoyles would have been all the more evil as Umbridge.
