I dont know about you lot but i start by doing the competitions with good prizes that i really want, then go back and do DVDS ect... but i do regularly come across competitions with prizes that i dont want (or too much effort) so i leave them to other people however i am finding myself re-reading the same competition several times as i havnt ticked it.(enter button)

I was thinking it maybe handy as you have a thanks button and enter button, how about a skip button? To save time

What do you think?

I think the idea is a really good one. Thanks for thinking of it :T

Perhaps this could actually save MSE some money?

Since the 'Enter' button puts a little green tick in the forum listing page it prevents compers from revisiting a comp thread that they've already done. A little red cross (as I saw someone suggest in our Comps Discussion thread), for a comp they had already looked at & decided not to enter (much the same as the 'Enter' button generates a little green tick), would mean that compers weren't repeatedly opening unnecessary threads.

This might all add up to quite a reduced number of unnecessary page views overall, meaning less bandwidth used on the poor MSE servers & more time for compers as they could be spending that time entering more comps that interest them & not opening & closing pages they've already looked at :D

It's also something that I've seen raised a few times, via PMs to me or in comp threads, from newer compers, how not to keep opening the same comp threads again & again when reviewing the comps board if threads have been commented on & bumped back to the front page, or even when they are just looking at the Comping Forum pages, scanning for the prizes they would like to win.

I can understand some compers wanting to only use the 'Enter' button on the ones they have physically entered, so a 'Skipped' or 'Not Entered' button would really be useful addition for compers to keep an even better track. Different strokes for different folks :)

To the best of my knowledge the 'Enter' button doesn't even show up in non Comping forums so it wouldn't affect the whole of the rest of the site Forums :) (Much the same way Compers don't have the 'WOW' button)

Tools are there to be used if they help someone & ignored if not. If it is something that MSE would add to our little corner of the site then excellent. It could be a very useful tool for some compers & as such I really hope that the Powers That Be will review this idea.

It would be good to see what other Compers think about this idea :)
Sad because you don't know what to do? Comping question? Take a look in the Comping Guide to find out

I'm new to all this comping but I think it would really help out, especially when trying to catch up and surely it wouldn't cause trouble to those who didn't want it as they could just ignore it :-)

As I mentioned in the other thread, I would find this really useful, just a simple red X as I find I am constantly opening threads I've already read especially if they have a generic/non memorable title like 'laptop' that I wouldn't remember or gets bumped when I am on catch up! I don't always have time to go through them methodically so when I get home I scan through for any with the yellow warning/short date triangle icon or any really good ones and am constantly going back through pages trying to catch up if I get time on the others, as you do itsmee, on things like dvds etc, this would really help avoid reopening ones I don't like. Interesting point about bandwidth etc VG.

The red X makes it a much quicker tool when scanning through a list.

I don't want to use enter if I haven't actually entered as it makes my screen incorrect and I wouldn't be able to distinguish with ones I have/haven't entered.

Thanks for raising this idea, would love to see this implemented :D

I personally would really find this useful and less time consuming as I do tend to find myself re-opening lots of threads I've already looked at but dont wish to enter. I could use the enter button but I like to keep track of how many comps Ive actually entered as Im unable to use things like spreadsheets etc that Ive heard some do. The ones I tend to keep coming across and re-opening are the blogs ones that dont have the word 'blog' in the title, it may be that I would like to win whats on offer but I dont like to enter via blog or comments etc.

I could also mark as thanked, but then how do I know who to thank if I were to win? It would also take an age to check my thanks to work out if Ive entered the competition or not. I appreciate that things werent so easy back in the day (as someone posted in the other thread) but things have moved on and will keep moving on,improving all the time and we can all benefit from ideas as good as this one.
It's better to keep your mouth shut and give the impression that you're stupid than to open it and remove all doubt :)

This would also be the case for me.I see in iwon iwon iwon all the time that people say check your thanks to see who posted the competition you won but you wouldn't be able to do this if you clicked thanks for - entered AND dont want to enter.

I recently also keep looking at competitions that may have a reply to them saying you have to be a store member or its expired but hasnt been moved to game over yet.The skip button would really help me loads for this.

Fingers crossed for the skip button X lol

I'm all for a 'red (x) cross' to say that I don't wish to enter a particular comp.

As VelvetGlove said, above in post #2, this would ease the burden on the MSE servers.

And save us compers a lot of time :D

Would certainly be useful. I personally enter whichever new comps I want to each day, so would have limited use to me. Though I can see the benefit of being able to red cross it, if it isn't suitable. Much more logical than clicking the enter button to rule it out of any future entries.(as I haven't actually entered

  • Yeah I'm up for that - you do waste a lot of time and bandwidth constantly re-opening threads that you've already discarded.

    Best regards
