did my Tesco shop today and noticed a lot of the value products are now branded as "market value" think it was mainly fruit and veg. is this an attempt to make value products seem more appealing to the credit crunch refugees?

I was in Tesco on Tuesday and I couldn't decide between Market Value Cheese and Tesco's own normal .

I looked on the back and they had the same Fat, Carbs, Calories etc etc per 100g - the whole list was the same, but they wanted 7p more for one of them but you got 100g more

    Something like £1.91 for 300g and £1.84 for 200g.

It was similar to that anyway. The whole Tesco Discounted brand/market value is nonsense. Most of it is goods they already have but rebranded to make it look like they are doing you a favour.
  • I buy tinned plum tomatoes from Aldi at 19p per tin. If you really need them chopped they cost 21p, which is a waste of 2p in my book. They are as good as any other tinned toms I have tried and fabulous in bol, chili etc.

Just want to say a big thank you to everyone on this thread. Have taken all your recommendations and started online shopping with Tesco to stop me impulse buying. Did weekly menu in advance. Chose as many value items as poss. Very impressed with big bag of value potatoes - they are Saxons - make lovely roasties!

I know I really shouldn't moan, cos 44p is still cheap, but a huge jump from around 28p last time I bought value tuna from asda. it is still just as good as any 'brand' tuna.
  • I haven't read all of the posts here so apologies if anyone else has recommended this - Lidl nappies (toddler size). I would only buy pampers when my son was a tiny baby as I found cheap nappies were useless, but when he was a toddler I discovered Lidls - absolutely brilliant, as good as the pampers Active Fit. Although my son is 5 now (& thankfully a long time out of nappies!) so I apologise if they have changed in the last 3 yrs since I bought them last!!!!!

Tried basic/value pasta but no-one liked it. It was too 'al-dente' even after cooking it way over the time suggested!
I buy the cheapest pasta possible, add a tiny drop of the cheapest possible olive oil & cook it for exactly how long they state on the packet, but stir it every 60 secs. It seems to work - my family are pasta mad & I've never had any complaints. (The stirring works particularly well with spaghetti)

Value tomatoes, value cheese, value pasta, value fromage frais and chocolate mousses, value curry sauce (though tend to add other spices to it), value baked beans in a curry or stew and the lads like them, alue spaghetti hoops, value brown bread, value rice, sometimes value biscuits and value crisps. All from Asda.
I will not buy value meat, eggs or alcohol.

I bought value eggs today, sorry everyone :o But my blood test gave a high cholesterol reading, and I can't give them up altogether.
So I had one small egg instead of one large one.
Phew, are the price increases ever going to end?
