Sainsbury's Basics Sweet and Sour sauce is 26p and it's not bad, like a lot of sauces you need to add veg to pad it out.

Eating this as we speak (leftovers from last night). Perfectly fine unpadded out anx very yummy!

Beware of things that claim to be 'value' and aren't!! I wanted dried apricots today - the value ready to eat were 99p for 250 g and the Tesco non-value ready to eat were 1.88 for 500g!!
I always do a quick calculation to compare the price per 100g or whatever - you have to watch these things.

we buy loads of value stuff but still spend loads on Flora, especially like the olive one. Anyone found a good and cheap alternative for this product?

Not sure of a flora alternative, but is always worth trying the own brand once to see if you like it? I was a complete Lurpak snob but in the spirit of downshifting tried the Tesco Butterpak spreadable and am a complete convert. Is about half the price too:j

Has anyone tried Tesco Value Chicken and Vegetable Pies? Try to avoid value meat but was tempted by the price too much! (74p for 4 pies!) Along with a few boiled potatoes and veg - thats 2 meals for me an OH. :-)

At that price I'd be tempted to try them. A friend gets them and likes them but our Tesco doesn't keep them. Just keep some nice gravy to hand to slosh over the top in case they're not that nice.

  • We get 2* tesco Value Pasta sauce @ about 0.30p and make home made meatballs using value mince! and chuck them in the sauce and water the sauce down a bit and tesco value spaghetti for a cheap dinner. Not as cheap as some things but comes in less than £3 for the 5 of us. 2 adults and 3 kids.

Sainsburys Basics baking potatoes are fine. Either four medium or three large in a bag for 55p. Probably not that cheap for those of you who buy your spuds by the sack, but I don't have room to store large quantities.

Try to see through the bag to choose ones without any green areas, although you can cut out tiny bits before cooking.
    :D I haven't bogged off yet, and I ain't no babe :D

  • Tesco Value chocolate spread is YUM. Tastes exactly like Nutella, not sure about the price though as 'inherited' it from someone who moved out of our house, huge tub though. It's almost gone!! :p

On Mysupermarket it's 78p for choc and 89p for choc hazelnut (both 600g so about 13p per 100g). Nutella is £1.43 for 400g or £2.59 for 750g (about 34p per 100g).

I'm not too keen on Flora itself. I buy Asda Sunflower Spread and find it tastier than Flora. I think that it's perhaps a little higher in calories but much cheaper in price :D .
  • Mr T Value Corned Beef slices is a regular purchase here, it's just as good as the full price version. Some value CB is really thinly sliced but this isn't :D
    Weight loss to date - 8st 13lbs :j
  • Has anyone tried any of Farmfoods bulk frozen meat? Especially casserole steak and mince. It's so cheap (£2.50 I think) I can't believe it'll be any good...
