  • Stork is 69p for 500g in Mr S. I dont use stork for twinks, i use real butter(on offer usually) However i use stork for making cakes etc, it is lovely.

    Hi

I use Tesco Value soft spread for cake making, although it does say on it "Not suitable for home baking"! I use it to make the cake and also to make the buttercream filling, and my cakes work out perfectly. ;)

    HTH.

    Debbie. :)

Will give that a go thanks. Have to melt the marg when making twink's hobnobs so hope that ok?! Will report back!

Thanks for that - so not much difference in price between the vitalite & stork - that surprised me. Do you use unsalted butter for twinks? Must admit I hadn't thought about using butter, presume you get a richer taste? Kids love my twinks the way I make them so will probably stick with marg though.:D
  • I bought Mr T Value golden syrup today - anyone tried it & is it ok?

I usually use this (tho now have a stockpile of Lyles bought when they were cheap and had vouchers on that were to a higher value than the original cost!) and I can't tell the difference in baking - maybe if you tasted both off the spoon you could, but certainly fine in flapjacks etc.
  • My good value item list:
    Bad value stuff
    Asda value tuna
    Tesco/ Morrisons/ Asda value cola
    Tesco/ Morrisons/ Asda value pasta
    Tesco/ Morrisons/ Asda value bread
    morrisons value tinned spaghetti

Tuna - always stock up when decent brand on BOGOF
Value pasta - disgusting to eat but great when coloured with food colouring for use as beads to keep the children quiet!
Bread - very dry but I always use value for breadcrumbs or if I know we are having lots of toast for breakfast.

    I like
Tesco Value Flapjack - cover with value plain choc for an extra treat!
Tesco Value Porridge - their normal stuff contains wheat which I can't eat anyway!
Tesco Value copier paper - great for printing off homework and general use. (I would treat us to slightly heavier paper for job apps etc)
Tesco Value PAYG mobile - great if, like me, you only use your phone for emergencies
TEsco Value choc swiss roll - use for triffles with Tesco value peaches (didn't like tesco value tinned custard but haven't tried for ages)
7 Angel Bears for LovingHands Autumn Challenge. 10 KYSTGYSES. 3 and 3/4 (ran out of wool) small blanket/large square, 2 premie blankets, 2 Angel Claire Bodywarmers

Tescos value custard is lovely, as are the instant desert mixes (angel delight type) in sainsburys for 9p a pack.

  • Whne I used to work for Nothern Foods I helped out the pizza factory. They made Sainsbury, M&S and Tesco pizzas along with Tesco Value one. When putting the toppings on you had to count how many pepperoni's you used (you could only use 10 I think it was). The only difference in the value ones was just a bit more tomato and perhaps a couple of pepperoni less. I buy value ones and just add some bits on (anchovies etc)

Has anyone tried Tesco Value Chicken and Vegetable Pies? Try to avoid value meat but was tempted by the price too much! (74p for 4 pies!) Along with a few boiled potatoes and veg - thats 2 meals for me an OH. :-)

I use lightly salted butter as its what i usually have in;) Not sure about the taste as i have only ever made them with butter, i also use golden caster sugar in them. And i'm a bit weird, i put half the sugar in with the butter and golden syrup to melt and put the other half in with the flour:o Think that might just be my little quirk:rotfl:

  • Value muesli is fab. I prefer it to the more expensive kind!
Value tomato soup is nice as it doesn't have that metallic taste that you get with heinz and is also a bit milder. (Adding a splash of milk also makes it nice and creamy!)
Value frozen chicken is fine, although not in portion sized pieces which could potentially cause problems.
Any value f&v has always been fine, just maybe a bit smaller than more expensive ones.
    Value spaghetti is also good.
I also use value stock cubes although these are much more difficult to crumble than branded ones and take a bit longer to melt. The flavour isn't quite as strong but at the price of them you could probably use 2 and still be cheaper!
Value yoghurts are also pretty good. Especially the strawberry ones! Yum!

I don't shop as Asda as regularly so have tried less SP stuff, although would recommend their peanut butter!
Their SP mince is a bit fatty but will suffice for a cheap meal.
SP chicken roll is just as good as more expensive stuff.
SP f&v are along the same lines as value ones and have always been fine for me.
