  • I bought Mr T Value golden syrup today - anyone tried it & is it ok?
Intend using it to make twink's hobnobs. Already use Value or Smart Price self-raising flour and Value Porridge Oats. The only thing I couldn't see was Value sugar - does it exist? Also, does anyone use a cheap margarine for baking? I usually use vitalite but wondered if I could use something else?
  • I bake with Stork, dont know if its cheaper than vitalite though:confused:

    Hi

I use Tesco Value soft spread for cake making, although it does say on it "Not suitable for home baking"! I use it to make the cake and also to make the buttercream filling, and my cakes work out perfectly. ;)

I use Co-op's own brand mayonnaise (which I think is much nicer than Hellmans), their tinned tomatoes, garlic puree (in a tube) and drinking chocolate powder. They also have an Indian food aisle and their Chicken Seasoning is fantastic stuff. I add just a quarter of a teaspoon to stews, soups and casseroles and it really brings out the flavour of the meat. It's a dark orange powder that comes in a sachet which lasts for months - the last one I bought cost 49p so it may have gone up slightly.

I also much prefer their baby lotion to Johnson's. It's half the price and doesn't sting my face like Johnson's!

Hi Mioliere, do you know if the Co-op mayonnaise is made using free range eggs? Want to be ethical, but it can cost - can only find Hellmans and M&S who make low fat version with free range eggs?

Hi Redfraggle - I've just looked at the jar and it IS made using free range eggs! Definitely worth trying - I think it is much better than any other make I have tried!

My groceries are predominantly own label, with a good smattering of value & very few brands. Like others, my philosophy is try it first, then if we like it I'll buy it agin, if we don't--I won't.
Me muvva is converting to value now & she even bought a couple of bits in Lidl's yesterday  so if she can change her shopping habits of an extremely lengthy life-time, (mid-80s & still living independantly:j ) I'm sure we could all follow suit :D
