I've tried the downshift challenge on everything that asda do a smartprice equivalent of, that I used to buy own brand. the only thing I didn't like, and have gone back to own brand was the smartprice tea. Weak and smoky flavoured, like lapsang souchong, which I hate!
We have tried all kinds of cheap teabags, but none much good really. I sometimes keep some in to used for a one-cup during the day."Knowledge is knowing that a tomato is a fruit. Wisdom is not putting it in a fruit salad"

well im pleased to report that quality of smartprice stuff is just getting better and better. darling brother took me grocery shopping yesterday and i managed to buy 40 items for less than 35£!!!!!! i found a lovely drinkable white wine for £2.13 (they do a red version too) and some amazing turkey breast pieces for £2.97. what a bargain!! so much cheaper than chicken!!! in fact outof the 40 items i bought over half were SP.....however i would recommend that people spend a little more on some items like frozen veg.....u tend to get bigger pieces that dont go soggy wen u cook them. i also think that in some cases its cheaper to buy the own label version instead of the value version. £1.47 for a massive tray of mushrooms?!? they wud go off bfore i can use them up.....
and i agree with an earlier post about the smartprice/basics/value mince. its terrible and more fat than meat!!! u wud b better off buying the pricier lean mince (fresh/frozen) and dry-frying it b4 using it for bolognaise/chilli etc..
SP frozen burgers/fish fingers are not tht good either, so i try to buy more expensive versions. the fresh sausages r terrible too!!!! all tough skins and a tiny amount of meat!!! YUCK!!0 -
I've just had some Cornish clotted cream (yummy) with jam on Sainsburys Basics fruit scones. The scones were 10 for 34p and extremely nice. They say on the pack "not so much fruit" but there were several sultanas in each one, so I'm not complaining. Glad I bought two packs now

I don't mind the Asda Smart Price tea bags. But, as an American, I may not be as picky as you Brits.
I've started buying Tesco long-life milk, which is 8p a liter cheaper than fresh (and even cheaper for skim. Both Asda and Tesco's value/smart price skim milk is 44p a liter.)
I have noticed that Tesco's value bread is the same price as Asda's (37p) but it's nicer. There's something weird about Asda's... although since it's sliced so thin, it lasts longer around here.
I'm perfectly satisfied with the Asda Smart Price biological washing powder. I buy the smaller boxes, which are 5p a load, but I probably stretch the 10-load box to 12 or so loads. (I keep some Persil to wash whites or things that I worry might be getting dingy. I will wash whites with Persil and some of that Oxy-whatever powder.):beer:0 -
I like the Sainsburys scones 10 for 34p as well! We also have the crumpets (35p) from the Basics range, stuffing is 12p and jelly (squares to make your own jelly) is 8p.
Basics pasta sauce is OK and we tried the Sainsburys chocolate drink powder and its ace! It was 55p, I think.

I bought a jar of this about a month ago (6p) and agree it's really nice (the checkout girl said she really liked it as well)
The following week I thought I'd get another couple of jars - this time 5p a jar.
Couple of weeks ago went to get another 2 jars - now 4p!! (Whitley Bay Sainsburys)

i've recently tried tesco value spaghetti & lasagne sheets which were as good as brand equivalents. asda sell a 30p jar of sp casserole sauce very nice (tomato & red wine) and have bought their sp chilli sauce in jars to try - we will add our extra hot chilli powder as we perfer it spicy:D:love: married to the man of my dreams! 9-08-090

I decided to try Asda SP Showergel. Not bad at all and very thick - thought it would be watery! It reminds me a bit of that Radox Original Source Lime one but nowhere near as overpowering. Just very fresh and clean smelling.
Not 100% sure but I think it was 13p - will definitely buy it again!! Will just have to decant it into another bottle - I'll never get away with a SP showergel bottle hanging from the rail where OH is concerned!.0
