I've tried the downshift challenge on everything that asda do a smartprice equivalent of, that I used to buy own brand. the only thing I didn't like, and have gone back to own brand was the smartprice tea. Weak and smoky flavoured, like lapsang souchong, which I hate!

I don't normally shop in ASDA as they are not local to me, but whilst visiting another town I tried ASDA smartprice frozen chicken breasts (400gm) for £1.20 and was very impressed as they were excellent and skinless too.

My store cupboard is full of value cans and packets from Tesco and Asda I have rarely found a product that my family will not enjoy. However I do find that their value cleaning products are not as good as branded ones, but by shopping for special offers and not having a brand loyalty I rarely spend more on these products than if I had bought the special value ones.
My oldest DD once told me it is a good job she learnt to read or she wouldn't know what to get out of the cupboard when helping cook dinner as all the cans and packets look the same:)

Lol, the amount of times in zombie-like state in a morning that i've poured SP pure orange juice instead of SP UHT skimmed milk into my tea :o :rotfl:

At least everything in the cupboards co-ordinate :D

  • I tried the value curry sauce in a jar from Sainsburys and was pleasantly surprised. I not very keen on sauces out of jars, but we were decorating and I needed something quick and easy. I would go as far as to say that I really liked it and as it was only 7p, or was it 9p? Well whatever, it was excellent value for money

  • We've tried loads of Asda Smartprice things, and I have to say that the vast majority of them have been absolutely fine, I prefer the baked beans to Heinz. In fact the only thing that I wouldn't buy again is the Smartprice thin bleach - thin isn't the word for it, you might as well just use water!
  • Asda smartprice beans are lovely, tinned toms, choc digestives, value bananas, peppers, mushrooms (I use loads), tinned mushy peas, noodles (flavoured ones kids need the odd chemical fix to keep them going LOL-not bad for a treat quick lunch at 9p) not washing up liquid I have gone back to fairy lasts 3 times as long. OOh yes Bacon as well, It seems to be the funny shaped bits from the good stuff, lovely- all looks the same to me in a sarnie!

  • an update: i recently found a bag of ownlabel (not basics) frozen broccoli and cauliflower on sale for £1 in sainsburys and i hav to say its better than the value ones.u actually get big pieces of veg tht keep their shape wen steamed!!!im a convert!!!!! however no matter how broke i am i will not buy the cheapie tins of cat food for my moggie!!the vet told me tht cheaper brands of petfood hav very little meat in them and i should buy the best food i could afford for him. now he has whiskas or felix wet food pouches and purina 1 or Iams biscuits!!! and for those people who r buyin the jars of readymade bolognaise sauce, its so much easier and cheaper to make ur own with a couple tins of tomatoes, good quality lean mince (co-ops frozen lowfat mince is the best) onions mushrooms garlic a splash of redwine and some dried basil or herbs of ur choice. served on top of good quality pasta and u hav ameal for 2 for less than 1.50 a head!!
