Hi-each time I shop -quite often with 6 children to feed-all boys -3 over 16 and 3 at primary school-I have tried more and more Asda Smartprice items-recent tries are jars of curry sauce to chuck on smartprice chicken fillets-9p a jar!! and bolognese sauce-26p a jar!Mint sauce -9p-use half a jar in frozen lamb mince to made a shepherds pie that smells like a sunday dinner cooking!Another good buy and tasty are smartprice branfllakes-76p but 36p at the moment! Frozen mixed veg and sweetcorn are good as are all the fresh fruit and veg.Always having to buy double amounts to cater for a large family I am trying to economise and reduce my shopping budget-oh -I do have 10% off as I work at Asda-discount comes in very handy!!!

'Asda Smart Price Spreadable' around 57p for the small pack - lovely equivalent for those spreadable butters that are around. Have to agree with bertiebots about the fullfat soft cheese as well - delicious.

I also use the SmartPrice Chilli Sauce - great with a little extra chilli powder/paprika added when cooking. Also use the dried mixed herbs.

I don't bother with the SP bleach and washing up liquid - BUT their toilet cleaner, all purpose liquid cleaner, cream cleaner, wire soap pads (they ALL go rusty after one use anyway!) are all great value and work fine. When I really have to cut the pennies back, I have no objection to the SP Biological Soap Powder (huge box) though under normal spending conditions, have to admit that I love the fragrance of their own brand soap powder - still great vfm.

The things I have tried and liked from the tesco value range are:

    Tinned tomatos
Any of the value tinned veg
    Bacon
    Sandwich ham
margarine (only use this for cakes)
    Bananas
Potatos (our tescos dont stock these anymore
    Red leicester cheese
    Custard cream biscuits
    Fromage frais
    Flour
    Mushrooms
Washing powder only when used with comfort conditioner
    Toilet roll
    Kitchen roll
    Tomato puree
    Dried spaghetti

Things from the tesco value range I dont like:
    Tbags
    Tinned Baked beans
    Cereal

I must admit I do prefer the Asda value range but it is more convenient to use Tescos as it is more local

Don't normally buy ASDA Smart Price foods but yesterday I bought ASDA Smart Price Salted Peanuts they are 21p for a 200gram packet. We really enjoyed them and couldn't tell the difference between them and the KP Nuts which cost a lot more, going to buy them from now on.

Have been buying ASDA Smart Price Flavored Noodles, have enjoyed them more than the expensive pot noodles but our South Shields store has stopped selling them so going to try ASDA Bolden.

Great thread, it dawned on me many years ago (thank goodness) that I was throwing money away by not buying the cheapest items in non-food categories (i.e. bin bags, wash up liquid, toilet cleaner, soap etc....) In a flash of inspiration (financial sanity?) I decided then and there to dispense with brand loyalty and seek the best available , but cheapest product in everything. I started with non-food items, it's by far the easiest way to downgrade to Value products and not notice the difference. I completely agree with the thread starter trying a Value product once is the way to go, if I don't like it I don't buy it again. Nothing to lost, everything to save!

These are the Tesco Value products I buy from Tesco Ireland, some may differ to Tesco UK products:

    Non-Food

    Toilet Roll
Bin Liners Roll of 40 white. (Treat gently, change often, they're fine!)
    Soap
    Anti-Bac Handwash
Pine Toilet Cleaner (huge saving changing to this alone- a third the price of the other cleaners 47c vs. about €1.50)
Washing-up Liquid (this is great and super cheap 38c/litre vs. €3/litre for Fairy, almost 8 times the price .)
It's better than Lidl's washing up liquid, their cheap washing up liquid I find a bit strange.
    Shaving Foam

    Food
Tea Bags (these are nice here, packed in Ireland though, just 89c for 80 bags, leading brand is about €3 for 80!)
Rich Tea Biscuits (might try others based on comments here!) I notice there's no hydrogenated oils/fats now in Tesco Value Rich Tea biscuits.

I do a raid regularly on my local Tesco for these so I try to keep a small stock in. That's another savers tip, running out of basic Value items can be costly because the alternatives are usually pricey. Also sometimes my local Tesco are out of stock so I also buy when I see them. Otherwise I do my majority of grocery shopping in Lidl and Aldi, far cheaper than Tesco for food.
  • Don't know if this has been mentioned but Asda dark chocolate is much better than Bournvilles', more cocoa, less sugar, and cheaper!

Win Win as far as I'm concerned

  • I tried the value curry sauce in a jar from Sainsburys and was pleasantly surprised. I not very keen on sauces out of jars, but we were decorating and I needed something quick and easy. I would go as far as to say that I really liked it and as it was only 7p, or was it 9p? Well whatever, it was excellent value for money

Totally agree, we have tried loads of makes of curry sauce all manner of stuff in jars tins and ready meals and this is the one I always buy (if you can find it as when it is in store it goes fast, is currently 8p a jar I believe and once you add a handful of peas and some chicken it is really tasty, is like a medium curry sauce you'd get from a chinese.

I've not read back [sorry:o ] but must say that I'm very impressed with Morrisons chopped tomatoes. They are no where near as 'watery' as other tinned ones we've tried & as I like mine on toast, this is a very big plus cuz they don't make the bread too wet:p
