wow there are a lot there, probably the reason I find it hard to make cuts you cant get lower than value can you! I don't think the quality is that much different to more expensive brands or I wouldn't buy it, there are some things I have tried as value and didn't like so we just get own brand.

Value things aren't always cheaper. The value shortbread is 43p for 125g but the Tesco shortbread fingers are 72p for 250g, that means the same amount of the value brand costs 14p more!

sainsburys value white chocolate 23p a pack really lovely as a treat and just as nice as the dearer versions.

Last time I looked at the per 100g price Tesco's own brand was cheaper than value;).

Didn't rate Value DW tablets. However our DW doesn't function well with all in one tablets - you still seem to need rinse aid and salt for a good results. Recently discovered Tesco Classic DW tablets which to my surprise left the plastic stuff dry - Finish seem to think you need their new special DW tablets to achieve this:confused:.
    I have plenty of willpower - it's won't power I need.

We too are reluctant swappers but we swapped from green giant sweetcorn to the tesco sweet sweetcorn and it was worth it aswell as the tesco chocolate spread and the tesco luxury quilted toiled roll.
They currently have nutella for a pound and the toilet roll 16 for 12
  • We buy tesco value:
    toilet roll
    kitchen towel
    chopped tomatoes
    biscuits/choc bars
    yorkshire puddings
    cheese
    sweetcorn
eggs (always used to buy free range but have reluctantly started buying value to cut costs)
ham (only for oh, i think its disgusting:p )
occasionally we buy value fromage frais and bananas :)
can anyone tel me if the value baked beans are particularly salty? i always buy tesco own brand but hopefully can cut costs if value beans dont taste too bad :)

  • Hi, it's ages since I've been on this thread. Have just used basics grated mozarella for homemade pizzas great, can't remember how much it was but a significant reduction on the fresh.

I buy Value Tinned Chopped Tomatoes from Tesco and occasionally tinned spaghetti in sauce. I tend to buy cheap food in Lidl and here are some the best that I have had:

Freeway Real Cloudy Lemonade - 35p ofr 2L (no artifical sweetners)
    Dentalux Herbal Toothpaste - 45p
Cordon Bleu Chicken Kievs (Ham & Cheese) - £2.29
    Chicken Burgers - £1.22
Gelatti Strawberry Crisp Ice Cream - £1.89 for 6 (real strawberry pieces in the ice cream which has been coated with white crispy chocolate and totally yum)
    Tinned Rice Pudding - 19p
Fromage Frais with Fruit on the bottom - 23p each.

I quite like tinned rice pudding and usually keep a tin or two in my store cupboard. Lidl's chicken burgers and kiev thingies are also kept as freezer quickies if you like - handy for when you have little time and want something quick. I know that some folks sniff at Lidl but sometimes their food is good but admittedly at other times it isnt. I will definitely buy the fromage frais again because it seems to be quite light and not overpowering like some.
  • I was just wondering what value range items people have tried and didn't like?

I made a comment on the pets site that the latest pack of 300 tesco savers nappy sacks just don't work on the dog cleaning up front! I've bought them for ages so it's the latest ones that are far too thin. No change in packaging. I can't imagine they would hold a nappy as they just tear. i just hope that this isn't a start to a decline in some of the other savers range ( and sorry if I've been too graphic!!)
Like Tesco savers shortbread and didn't notice i'd paid more for it!! Thanks for pointing that out.
Love Savers Choc desserts - 6 maybe in a pack or 4? Anyway, they are just choc mousse and are delicious. Also a big fan of savers choc - the dark choc has about 50% cocoa solids for 25p or so. You only need a couple of squares to satsify the urgelaughing-smiley-014.gif
I've been encouraged with this thread and will try more savers products.

ed to add - Lidl raspberry jam just has to be the best!!! I checked its rasp content against a Frank Cooper jar and I'm sure the 67p 9was then) Lidl one had a higher percentage.
