My Tesco doesn't do the value peanut butter but just got the mixed fruit jam (apple, strawberry, raspberry). 33p for a large jar and its fab! Lovely when used in the recipe from this site for jam doughnut muffins.

I think the value jams are OK for baking etc. but wouldn't want it on my toast. I used to work in a jam factory years ago and the reason the value jams tend to be 'mixed fruit' is that they are made up of batches of normal jam that didn't get past quality control (don't get me wrong its perfectly edible just maybe the wrong colour/texture etc.). These are then mixed and boiled together and colouring/flavouring added, maybe some more sugar. The second boil does affect the flavour (it ends up less fruity and more syrupy).

The confectionery section of the factory made jelly babies/fruits etc. for a variety of stores/brands as well as supermarket value versions. Although all made in the same factory the ingredients and sometimes recipes varied markedly between the cheap and the premium as they are manufactured to a particular price point. The premium sweets tended to have natural flavouring/fruit juice compared to the budget ones (although I do think the 'contains real fruit juice' is a marketing ploy I mean how much fruit juice are you actually getting even if you eat the whole bag?)

Anyway I'm not trying to put people off value versions - I buy a lot myself its just that there is usually a reason why they are value. But if you like - what the heck.
  • I use smartprice foil at 29p a roll and works exactly the same as the £1.35 one! I also keep in the fridge some of the SP mature cheddar for cooking, although I dont like it in sarnies. Kidney beans are fine too.

I bought some ASDA Smartprice swiss-style muesli ( 57p for I think 500g), put it into an empty Alpen packet, and my daughters haven't noticed the difference. Quite a saving so I think I'll carry on doing it!

This week I have eaten expensive Birds Eye fish fingers (because there was a comp on them) and also cheap ones and to be honest I much prefered the taste of the cheap ones.
