  • Tesco Value "Dorito style" crisps are good. Especially if dipping.

Value Salted Peanuts are great too.

We eat this a couple of times a week for a cheap pudding. It's also a good way of getting the kids to have milk without them knowing it. You can also freeze it to make a nice ice cream.

Glad to see this thread is still going strong :)

  • just tried the tesco value cling film and it's useless,it wont 'cling' to anything. But i do use loads of other value stuff. I used to but everything heinz, keloogss etc now every week i try either shops own brand or the value. some things are awful but most are great. Even if the value stuff you dont like try the shops own brand. Worked with somebody who had previously worked in a factory making M&S orange juice and a value juice for another supermarket chain with exactly the same stuff.

  • The Asda smartprice Fruit and Fibre cereal is yummy !

I've recommended this to everybody I know! It's packed with fruit and coconut!

I also recommend the ASDA Smart Price chicken stock cubes - they are honestly nicer than Oxo or Knorr. I tend to boil a little water in a kettle and mix to a paste in a teacup, rather than making a watery liquid in a jug.

Somerfield's value range Brown Sauce is good too. A lot of budget Brown Sauce can taste overtly vinegary, but this is quite nice.

I've yet to find any budget frozen peas which aren't like bullets though.

Was wondering if we had any bods out there that could do a spread sheet for all us MSE & DFW's. If I had the know how or brains to do it myself I would.
i.e Morrisons/Sainsburys toilet roll as good as Andrex.

    That's a great idea!

You could use Google Documents to create a shared spreadsheet that anybody (by invitation) could update: http://docs.google.com/

I just don't know how you'd rate hundreds of items though, before adding them to the spreadsheet.
  • We buy ASDA SP:

tinned toms (not chopped - not worth the extra pennies, can chop 'em myself!)

I just take a pair of scissors to them whilst they're still in the can! A dozen or so snips usually does the trick and saves on washing-up by not pouring them into a bowl beforehand.

We always buy chopped toms, I shall switch now!

I avoid Tesco Value Cling Film too (and the sainsburys basics ones) - they just don't stick to anything. Value foil is fine though.

We always buy value flour which always works fine for me.

Value cat litter seems to be fine too, cat has had no problems using it, which is good because we were originally buying the £5 a bag stuff from Pets at Home which lasted about two weeks! The value stuff is £1.17 (used to be 99p but went up!)

I tend not to buy value meat though, its normally full of water and tastes awful - I'd rather make something veggie which tastes better.
If we are cutting back we will have less meat or I will buy something like a cheap brisket joint or a standard chicken and get a few meals and stock out of it instead.

SmartPrice Pitta breads are nice, 29p for a pack of 6.

    I completely agree!
  • Value squash is awful, tried Basics and Value now and they have a powdery, aspirin yukky taste. This is one of the few things that I will only buy brand name...Robinsons all the way. Don't even like the shop own brand.

Although not strictly a budget brand, ASDA's blackcurrant Hi-Juice is gorgeous. It's only 99p but it lasts ages as you only need a little in the glass. I've never bought the low-sugar version as I tend to stay away from artificial sweeteners if I can.
