I do think that if you did a blind taste test on a lot of things you would be surprised at which you would choose!
I once went into my local Spar to buy Vladivar vodka and they had run out. The lady recommended the Imperial Vodka (Spar's own) and I was dubious because Ive tried cheap vodka's before and hated the twang they have. However, it is lovely and much, much nicer than Vladivar. I was so surprised. I even did a taste test with 3 different relatives who drink vodka and they all chose the cheaper Spar version instead of the Vladivar!
On the food front, my favourite plain digestive biscuits are from Aldi. They are far superior to any other ive tried and Sainsbury's do the best milk chocolate digestive. They don't have the oaty bits that stick in your teeth like McVities in my opinion!0 -

Tesco Value Fruit Yoghurt 125g £0.08 bargain- alt 4 pack £0.290

I use Sainsbury's Basics Mild Cheese on pizzas. One large block grated up does four large pizzas for us (usually cook 2 pizzas at a time so half the block gets frozen grated ready to use next time). It's very mild and creamy in flavour, melts brilliantly and is much cheaper than mozzarella. I don't like cheddar on pizza as it's too strong a flavour so this cheese is perfect.0

I thought it would be good to have a reference of which 'value' (I realise every brand has its own name for its cheap brand but im a Tesco chick so refer to them all generically as value) products are a good buy and which are a false economy.
I have been buying value brands for a while, but thinking I might need to try a few more to help me with the grocery challenge. I have been reluctant to try anymore as if it turns out to be a bad purchase its a waste of money.
I shall start with my own contribution.
good buys
Mr T value sandwich bags if you dont need resealable, tie handle gimmicks.
Mr T value biscuits (I think I have tried them all and they taste exactly the same)
Mr T value eggs - great eggs just random sizes
Mr T value all fruit and veg - yet to find anything wrong, if its a bit bruised I cook it rather than eat it raw.
Mr T value tinned tomatoes - a staple in my house
Mr T value chicken soup - I wouldn't have as soup but as a cooking sauce its great.
Mr T value porridge - fantastic 'fillerupper' for breakfast.
bad buys
Mr T value teabags - leave a lot of silt in the bottom of the mug.
Mr T value washing up liquid - doesnt foam up so you need much much more.
Mr T value cocoa pops - tasted foul, different texture
Mr T value bread - doesnt fill you up so you eat half a loaf in one go.
Mr T value nappies - only suitable for a child in potty training who will only be wearing them when they're mostly clean / dry.
Mr T value baby wipes - horrible and stinky too
I will leave it there and some more when I think of them. Please add your contributions and feel free to dispute any of my mine if you feel differently.0 -
Hi Sassamac,
There's a recent thread on popular value items that should help so I've added your post to it. This thread may interest you too:

I tried Tesco value milk chocolate the other day, 25p a bar!
It is the best choccy I have ever had! Seriously, boyfriend said I was making it up.. haha !
I've got two bars this week and gonna make him try some. It's similar to what I call xmas chocolate, the stuff you used to get in advent calendars a few years ago.. yummy! Try it!
Not quite the same, but I always used to prefer Weight Watchers cherry bakewells compared to any others! strange I know..
Also, well worth buying cheap flour if you bake a lot. Tescos own brand value flour 36p for 1.5 kg bag.. bargain!BSC Member 155
