  • I'm new to all of this but...
I've tried most supermarkets value bananas - no problem there.
Sainsburys do a bag of frozen 'white' fish skinless and boneless in their basics range it's not cod but you can't taste the difference in a good old fish pie and it's only £1.50 a bag!!!
Tescos value choc chip cookies are not quite up to scratch but again if that's all you have they are ok!

I bpught a pack of Sainsbury Value Peppers at the weekend because that was all they had left. The two red peppers were fine but the 3 green peppers are horrible - so bitter. Any ideas how to make a bitter pepper more palatable or do I have to bin it (not very OS I know but they are truly awful).

Just put the green peppers in your fruitbowl and leave them to ripen. They take a while, though.

I've heard that putting them close to bananas will speed the ripening process (something to do with ripening bananas releasing sulphur dioxide) but that may be a load of tosh.

Haven't read all through the thread....!

Tesco value citrus fruit (oranges) is usually okay if you check the nets for bad ones.
They're good for juicing with taste comparable to others.

Lidl large Navel oranges 1.89kg kilo are sweet and juicy. Again check the nets thoroughly.
  • My husband adores coleslaw and says Lidles is better tasting/value than Tescos or anybody elses - cheaper too. Apparently there have been old ladies fighting over it so the store manager tells us!! Sad!!
  • Have just seen the comment re lemsip - spoke to my GP years ago and he said just get some proper lemon juice and solulable aspirins/paracetamol and make your own. Great for kids cos you add honey/sugar if they don't like it `asis' and add `a little of what you fancy' for us grown ups for late night medication for colds/flu - scotch, brandy.........

I agree with you, a lot of these cold remedies and other 'extra strength' remedies often only contain paracetamol the extra being caffiene! Suggestion a good cup of coffee and 2 paracetamol!! to keep you going.

Hi everyone. Lots of canny shoppers on here - well done for the tips.

Re Lemsip - always use soluble aspirin/hot water/squeezed lemon juice/honey (good tip for the person with the yukky honey - though I'm not wishing the 'flu on you!) - and, for adults of course, a splash of Tesco's own whisky (I can't tell the difference when it's mixed - likewise their gin!)

I steer midcourse here - buy lots of value stuff - for those who don't like the tuna, I find the cheapo in brine fine, but then I drain it and mix with low-calorie Tesco mayo. I like to buy the "healthy eating" for some stuff, and always try to buy meat that's organic (when reduced, of course - stash it in the freezer!) or at least from the butcher who knows where the meat has come from.

Value beans are fine - just squirt some Tesco tomato puree (25p) to bolster it up a bit.

Morrisons Trim Flakes - I can't tell the difference between them and Special K. Aldi cereals are good as well!

Re the pasta - I only buy wholewheat as well but it's reasonably cheap from Tesco, Morrisons and Somerfield - you just have to see who's got the best offer.

And I can only presume everyone's first port of call in supermarkets is the reduced counters! I've bought bashed boxes (NOT tins!), things held together with parcel tape etc. All helps!

Lidl is the only store within walking distance so I end up there for most of my shop and I'm always impressed by what I buy.

Spices and flavourings- around 40p a jar. I buy a new one each time I visit because nothing makes a bad meal better than a bit of herbs.

Crisp and snacks are dirt cheap and alot more delish than brand names.

Wine, they do little bottles of red and wine that are brilliant and at £1.74 a bottle. I buy them in bulk so that I always have a bottle for a meal. I live on my own so it means I feel that I'm wasting wine when I buy a big bottle. They taste nice as well.

Freeway Cola not the stripe stuff is good but only when chilled.

Pickles, olives, gerkins are all far, far cheaper than other shops espiecally olives.

They do a lovely chilled pizza for 99p, great for a night in.

The italian ice cream that is at the moment 99p is lush.

    Lemon and lime marmalade. Lovely.

You can go in there with £2.50 and come out with a good night in. I love it.
