Ooh, I will have to try that now, thanks for that tip Bogof_Babe! I don't drink cider much but when I do its usually in a pub and its often Strongbow.
I fancy a cider now, pity I've not got any.
I will definitely give it a try. Mmm, a nice ice cold cider to accompany me when I go and sit out in the garden, lovely!:beer:0 -
Despite being a terrible food snob, when I was skint I bought loads of Tesco Value products and I can recommend the pasta (25p for 500g, tastes like any other pasta), and the chopped tinned tomatoes (perfectly adequate for making a pasta sauce, curry or casserole). The apple juice is fine but for some reason, the orange juice is vile. I thought the beans were perfectly adequate too.
Even though these days I'm more of an organic, Fair Trade, Taste The Difference type of girl I still use Value flour. And I discovered only yesterday that Sainsbury's Basics feta cheese is the proper Greek stuff whereas the mid-price version is from France and consequently less authentic...0 -
Someone mentioned Value gravy granules earlier... sorry, can't find the post now to namecheck them. I read the label recently and found out that they don't contain any meat or meat extracts. Far from being annoyed about this I was delighted as I am vegetarian and can now use them in vegetarian dishes to which I want to add a meaty, savoury taste, and also for things like vegetarian sausages and mash. I would recommend them to any other vegetarians out there who are like me, ie vegetarian because they are animal-lovers rather than because they don't like meat!0

Our local branch (Milton) has removed a lot of Value lines from the store which is quite annoying, have to go to another branch to get them.
Don't forget the fresh yeast from the instore bakery - which is free, just ask!
Makes yummy bread.
1lb Tesco Value plain flour
1lb 100% Stoneground Wholemeal strong flour
1tsp salt
1pt warm water
2oz fresh yeast
Mix together to make dough (I use a mixer with dough hook). Split into two lumps, put on greased baking tray in oven, wait 20-30 minutes for rise (in winter you might need to put the oven on very low) then turn to 200C and bake 20-30 minutes. Usually do this with something else that needs the oven, saves energy and tastes better too as the steam helps the crust.0 -
Sorry if its already been mentioned but Sainsburys Basics Toilet Roll only £1.13 for 12 rolls!
And it doesnt disintegrate like some cheap toilets rolls. The saving is ridiculous as a pack of 9 or 12 well known brand rolls often costs around a fiver. Plus its environmentally friendly as its made from recycled wood and the plastic it comes in can be recycled in the stores carrier bag recycling point.0 -

Loads of you say that basic baked beans have runny sauce. I put a small knob of butter or margarine(full fat type works best) after heating and it thickens the sauce and makes it taste creamy. My eldest son adds garlic too - ok if you arent planning to socialise soon after!
Also my fave basic foods are asda 8p noodles, chopped tomatoes (tesco are best), asda own brand teabags (havent found a cheaper one that tastes nice), honey, tesco liver and bacon pate, asda brie.
If you have small children try basics on them - mine couldn't tell the difference most of the time. They got pickier as they got older though!0 -
I don't know if this has been posted as I've been away for a while and haven't read the whole thread but I just bought Sainsburys basics honey and it is HORRID! It tastes like chemicals or the beehives are right next to the M25! I normally just have it in yoghurt or on my tesco's value wheatabix (yummy by the way) but I can't touch it... what shall I do with it.0

Do you make bread? You could use it instead of sugar? I use honey in breadmaking and I prefer it. But not tried the value one.0 -
Tesco Value sultanas were a waste of money - lots of grit and stalk in them. Usually only put them on my cereal so noticed the difference! Their Value mixed dried fruit is fine though, strangely enough....0
