smiler34 we've tried virtually everything on that list at some point apart from the bottom two items, and the only one we stopped buying was the value sweet and sour sauce in tins. We buy the one in a jar from LIDL, which is slightly more expensive but we find it much nicer. We would still use the Tesco value one occasionally, we just prefer to pay a bit extra for the LIDL product

The only Tesco value items we wouldn't use again have been their teabags and a couple of laundry/dishwasher-related products, but generally we have been extremely pleased with their value range
Thanks to all who post constructively.

Has anyone tried Value squash? If so what's it like and what flavours are nicer.
I usually shop at Morrison's but close to others as well. Thanks.

I've tried it and it's OK as a mixer in drinks but not really as a drink on it's own as it tastes too chemically.

Have decided to stop being so stuck up when it comes to value stuff and am considering putting the following things on my shopping list this month. Can anyone who is well versed on the Tesco value stuff please just go through list and tell me if there is anything on there that should seriously be avoided. Thanks.

the anti bac handwash is fine, as are the ginger nuts. We have the apple & orange juice & find it fine too
the peanut butter is excelletn & i choose this over sunpat any day.
weve had the songe puddings, they are OK.

I wouldnt bother with the batter mix if you have flour & eggs! save yourself 10p :D

I use the value plain flour all the time, I cant see what the difference is between this & permuim stuff

dried herbs I expect will be fine

value sliced carrots- are they tinned? only the fresh value bag works out cheaper.
 Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
    This Ive come to know...

  • Never buy premium flour, value sort as good as any brand.

Aldi have alot of good stuff. Their orange and lime marmalades are excellent, as is their 70% cocoa dark choc (got a mention in BBC Good Food Mag recently). Their fruit, salads and vegetables are usually fresh and good value. Their Belgian (Guylain type) seashells are more-ish! (not available all-ear-round) The dishwasher tablets and lemon shampoo and conditioner are good There's certainly nowt wrong with the red label teabags either. (Lucky enough to have a friend with a Nestle factory shop card so can get very cheap coffee from time to time) The custard is to die for! Jumbo bars (no taste difference from those hazelnutty wafer things that tell you to eat them!) Fresh and uht milk, olive spread are good.
Many of the tinned fruit and vege are excellent value for money but the mushy peas - yeuch:eek:
Have had their fresh prawns recently, yum, and their frozen joints of lamb and beef are good.
All the biscuits are very good, but in common with most cheaper ones are made with hydrogenated (trans) fats :naughty:
Oh and the 2 minute pilau rice is ace, as is the oxtail soup.

The brown sauce from Netto is nice, not as vinegary as premium brand stuff.

I've tried a quite a few value/smart price food items and for the most part have been pretty good. The chicken fillets are fine, no funny flavours....

smiler34 - not tried personally, but I think judging by other peoples comments the sweet and sour and the pasta sauce were to be avoided. But at these pirces, I reckon most things are worth a go anyway.

AussieLass - Value squash is awful, tried Basics and Value now and they have a powdery, aspirin yukky taste. This is one of the few things that I will only buy brand name...Robinsons all the way. Don't even like the shop own brand.

Also value flour...everyone says this is no different. Well I had my first loaf using strong flour and I have to say it was better, but not very noticeably iyswim. I will continue to use Value/Basics flour (31p for 1.5kg) for bread. But might treat myself to the Own brand strong flour for when we have guests :) (49p for 1.5kg)

Oh, and strong flour makes a lot of difference when making pizza dough.
