Hi I'm new to MSE and this board is great. We have recently been cutting down on our food bill and using a menu plan (like my mum used to) and we've saved loads that way. I can now do a two weekly shop for me, hubby and little'un for around sixty pounds. Only thing I buy separate is the dog/cat food. We shop at ASDA and buy mostly smartprice items. The only branded items I buy are squash and washing powder as hubby gets a rash if I use the cheaper stuff, but I have got a bottle of value laundry liquid for the nets etc..

SP fish in butter sauce are nice, SP sweet and sour sauce, SP
ketchup/brown sauce. For little one to take to school for her snack box, I buy SP fromage frais 44p for 6 and SP chocolate digestive biscuit bars. I buy ASDA's own crisp/snack type things too.

I wouldn't bother with the orange squash, its not very nice. Give it try, we buy most value items now and you can't tell the difference with most of them!!!!

I love kettle style crisps...I love the M&S salt and vinegar ones too but at 50p a bag its a nogo at the mo. How much are the lidl ones? My nearest lidl is a bit of a trek, but i do intend to check it out sometime.

They are usually 79p for big bag (same size as the big Kettle ones) but quite often they are on offer for 49p. Their round shortbread (59p) is the best I have tasted and I am a bit of an addict.

Forgot to mention the Value after dinner mints - really good and if you take them out of the box nobody is any the wiser!

Also not Value but the Tesco Coconut shampoo and conditioner are really good for dry/damaged hair - really cheap and great big bottles! Only thing is my DD noticed that the shampoo bottle is the same shape/size as the Tesco Naturally washing up liquid:eek: although the not the same consistency/colour/perfume (thank God!)

Never seen after dinner mints, must look out for those. The value chocolate eclair sweets are great (plain wrappers too so no one would know).

The value conditioner is great too (30p for 500ml). Discovered this by accident. Had bought it to kill the foam in my VAX when using stardrops to clean my carpet. I'd ran out of my usual hair conditioner so used a bit of this. I have very long hair and it left it shiny, smooth and soft and smells lovely.

Tesco Value soya milk has the Soil Association stamp on it, but is cheaper than the soya milk which is labelled as being organic.
Lidl baked beans get the OH "only Heinz are any good" seal of approval!
  • I love thier Value chocolate chip cookies dipped in thier Value Hot Chocolate drink. mmmm

The biscuits taste really buttery and the hot chocolate is really creamy - but as I'm watching the old waistline I don't have them very often.

I buy quite alot of thier value range and have had no complaints so far.

Tried their Value strawberry jam and peanut butter today. Peanut butter is alright - nice and moist, although I would probably prefer it 'crunchier'. Jam is...lets say edible, but that's about all :)

Oh and a heads up. Tesco's own chocolate bars (Milk/Dark/White) - not the value kind - NASTY.

BTW, greenpixey, I have often seen it said on here that value vodka passed a few times through a Brita filter tastes just like the posh stuff ;) (think that tip came from Ticklemouse, cheers TM!)
I've tryed the basic vodka from Sainsburys and I didn't filter it once and it tasted like premium stuff to me but then I don't drink it staight alot. I found I didn't have the kick of an aftertaste in my mouth I get from other vodkas either. I can't see the value from Tesco being that much different  .

  • Talking of great "value" jams, has anyone else out there tried Lidl's "Maribel" and "Primadonna" jams ?!!!! They are gorgeous. The Maribel ones come in raspberry, strawberry and fruits of the forest, and the Primadonna one is cherry. The jars cost 79p for 450g and are really fruity. The raspberry one has seeds in and the cherry one has whole cherries in. I think you can also get marmelades.

    I love Lidl !!!!
