  • Value ketchup is pretty good - a bit sweeter than Heinz but I soon got used to it. Value kidney beans and value frozen corn are indistinguishable from branded. I don't like Value Cola and much prefer Freeway from Lidl. I also don't like value carrots as I found they rotted more quickly than the loose carrots - seemed like they hadn't been dried properly before they were packed.

    Hi all

    I regularly buy Basics/Value/Smart Price : -
    • UHT skimmed milk
    • Fish fingers from Mr T - I prefer them to branded but maybe that's just me :D
    • Jaffa cakes - yum yum
    • Fruit and veg
    • Sponge cake mix
    • Pitta bread
    • Tortilla wraps
In fact I'll usually try anything except meat as I'm a bit fussy about that. :o

If the basics range doesn't do an item I'll try shops own brand and overall, my shopping bill has plummeted. Yesterday for example I had to pop into Mr T on my way to visit my old mother. I decided to take her some biscuits and went to get Kit Kats - Mr T wanted £1.79 for a standard pack of ordinary Kit Kats  - even !!!!!! Turpin had the decency to wear a mask! Needless to say I took Mr T's own brand version at 88 pence and I can happily say they tasted exactly the same. :D

    Edit

Meant to add that as far as biscuits go, I have yet to find one in the basics/value ranges that wasn't every bit as nice as the big brands. Don't think you can lose with biscuits :D

I really like some of the value tinned soups. Most of the time I cook from scatch but occasionally I like the convenience of a tinned soup. Asda veg soup is lovely and only 17p per can and other supermarkets have similar products often on the bottom shelf.

Value beans & sausages, the biscuits, pasta ect.I drink CoOps yellow label cola at 29p a bottle, tastes better than the real thing.Tesco value bog roll...why pay £2 odd for a twin pack of a branded one? I mean a quick swipe of the arrse & it's flushed down the bog anyway...
TBH the's lots of great value products out there & in this tight climate, even the 'I'd never buy those' food snobs are now buying them.I've a mate who's a stacker in Tesco's & she told me the demand for the value lines has shot up over the past few months.
Example is I like a whisky, quite often when I go & buy a bottle, all the Tesco's own brand (at £10.79) have gone leaving the brands on the shelf.Tesco recently had Grant's whisky on offer at £10 for a 70cl.They were sold out.

I tried the Asda Smart Price chocolate digestives last week and really liked them. I'm sure they were 31p so I won't be buying McVities again (not that I'd bought them in a while).

I also have 4 jars of the Asda Smart Price pickled beetroot which was 10p a jar (not sure if that is the usual price) and it is absolutely fine.

I'm horrified at what I used to spend on some of the branded stuff:eek:

It's probably already been mentioned, but Tesco Value teabags. 80 bags for 29p. I've pretty much always drunk Tetley Tea, but thought I would give these ago. Was pleasantly surprised, they make quite a strong cup as well, so will easily make 2 cups with. I will definitely be buying these from now on.

I'll second the Asda smart price choc digestives...they taste no different from the more expensve brands.
Also smart price custard creams, bourbon , choc chip cookies and caramal wafers are all worth getting. No one would even notice they were value.

Smart price cheese spread , Smart price pork pies (my hubby cant get enough of these)

my absolute bargain tho is the smart price shower gel 8p!!!
