I just did a broadband speed test and this was the result. I have just found the speed really really slow a lot of the time recently although tonight its running twice as fast as it has been doing. Do you think I should be on the 4 mb now as they used to upgrade customers yearly didnt they?

    download 1712 kbs
    upload 183 kbs

    this is at 10 20pm

Last I knew of I was on 2mb bb, free tv and unlimited telephone for £19.95 a month.

They told me that this would take me into another 12 month contract even though I've been with them ever since they came to our street. She did only tell me that though once it had gone through.
    Thanx

You can't rely on speed-test sites for results, they are unreliable. You don't know how many people are running tests at the same time as you, their web-server will only be able to dish out at a certain speed, if loads of people are doing speed tests then they won't be able to send the data to your PC quick enough. The only true way is to download 3 or 4 files at the same time from somewhere like http://gamefiles.virginmedia.com and then add together the speeds indicated.

Your current result however looks OK.

You are sure your PC isn't virus or spyware infested? have BBC iPlayer on the system without telling it not to run when not using it etc.

There are no plans for 2mbit to go up to 4mbit, there are plans for 4mbit to go to 10mbit, these rises aren't yearly just when VM decided it's time and have the infrastructure to do so.

Have you been throttled during the hours of 16:00 and 21:00?

    See: http://stm.brion.me.uk

If you aren't being throttled and you are still having issues of slow speed then VM can investigate for you in their excellent support newsgroups.

    For cable broadband: virginmedia.support.broadband.cable

If you are new to newsgroups (although they were around before www) have a look at: www.virginmedia.com/newsgroups
It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... It's no one not noone, It's a lot not alot, It's got not gotten... Panini is the plural of panino - there is no S!!

I don't know if I'm being throttled or not but I don't really download anything much just occasionally. This is just general surfing shopping ect but pages are sooo slow to load its tedious sometimes. Also its happening outside those throttle times on the site.

I don't think I have any virus or spyware issues or anything running that doesn't need to be as I have all that covered really and check regularly. Unless they have been doing work in the area but this does happen a lot its just got worse lately like almost all the time since christmas. Tonight its working ok again.

Thanx for those links I will look into them I wasn't aware of the newsgroup till you mentioned it, it looks good.
    Thanx

Confusingly, a long-running thread entitled Home Phones: Stick but save Discussion Area carries details of what VM subscribers have achieved.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.
