What are the different 'needs' of each hand set ?

please tell the needs of each one, as in

the Nokia is good for somebody with XYZ needs,

and the SG3 is good for somebody with XYZ needs,

In terms of specs it's mainly about a screen resolution and a microSD slot.
However, the main difference is between the OSs and user interfaces: Android vs Windows Phone.

I can't tell you that because everybodies needs and wants vary, basically YOU need to decide what is best for you then folk can answer if one handset maybe more suited to the listed requirements than the other.

The Nokia Lumias are rubbish, frankly.

I own the 710 and it's the worst piece of tech I've ever used.

And every current Lumia is now obsolete as they can't be upgraded to WP8.

Samsung (and Android) is a whole lot better imho.

I don't think there's a lot of difference between Android and iOs in how good they are, and how they suit different people, but Windows Phones are terrible and Nokia (like RIM) a dying company.

Lumia advantages are nice design (in my opinion), easy to use interface, good social network integration, good camera, free offline (no data connection required) sat nav for life.

Disavantages are no memory card slot, you have to use Zune to get files on and off, no bluetooth file transfer, not as many apps as Android

SGS III Advantages - Huge, high quality, super sharp screen, memory card slot, plenty of apps, good camera, NFC, easy file transfer.

Disadvantages - It's huge (in my opinion)

    Why, what's wrong with it?

How does not being upgradeable to Windows Phone 8 make Lumias obsolete? By that logic, a big chunk of Android phones that are stuck on 2.3 are also obsolete aren't they?

The 710 suffers poor battery life, notification sounds ending a voice call, a keyboard that annoyingly disappears..Zune - why no drag & drop? and endless other issues.

Suffice to say when I need to reliably do anything I'll pick up my Sony.

There are apps being written today that will work on Android 2.3 - almost every app will work on 2.3; apps written for WP8 won't work on any current Windows Phone. And I can't see developers bothering with making special versions for the few who bothered with 7 or 7.5.

As I wrote elsewhere, Nokia must have an ignominious record for introducing a new top of the line phone in the UK - the Lumia 900 - and obsoleting it in the same month. One could blame Microsoft for this, but then Nokia decided to get in bed with MS.

I've got the 710 and I'm happy with it.

I'm not going to get into a 'my phone's better than your phone' tug-of-war though. :)
