There is no way anyone would have been able to get to this prom on the bus. A taxi would have been the only option.
thats really bad planning on behalf of the school
The reason that dd's school has it's prom where they do every year is because it's easy to get to.

I live behind a hotel that holds prom parties every year and I know that some people do go way OTT but from what I've seen this year the dresses are starting to tone down a bit, more like cocktail dresses rather than the long flowing dresses most of my daughters friends were in at their prom.

Though some of the transport is bonkers, we've had everything from hummer limos, fire engines, a pink camouflaged tank and even a tractor :rotfl:

I have been looking at the pictures today.

At least 4/5 of the dresses had trains about 6 foot long like brides, it made the pictures look odd to me.

Re Christmas/birthday gifts - these are often tangible things such as mobiles, ipads, clothes) and as such are longer lasting than a night out.

    .

I actually have to say, in some ways i don't believe it is necessarily better to have something tangible than a lovely night out, where you have years of memories.
I have been out to restaurants, enjoyed a gorgeous meal, had a fantastic time and could have bought a mobile (and occasionally more) for the money I've spent. What happens to that gadget after a few years, it goes for recycling - some of which isn't disposed of ethically and some person in a developing country is exposed to health risks as a consequence.

A night out at the theatre, lovely meal, family get together all cost money to a lesser or greater extent, but you can't get better. these proms are usually a one off, while I'm not into silly money, it's nice to enjoy it if you can. While I appreciate not everyone can, it's the same as you grow up into your adult life anyway. I couldn't afford to go out on many a night out when I was younger.

As for those clicky girls who look down their noses if you haven't got fake tan on and an expensive dress. There's always been an in group of nasty girls before these things existed, they haven't suddenly just appeared out of nowhere..

You really can pick up some gorgeous prom dresses on Ebay for peanuts. I suppose it is like weddings in a way, I have a friend who is going to a wedding in 3 weeks and she has spent £800 on an outfit. That same outfit was on Ebay last week for £70.......I haven't told her.

Whilst browsing the same section I came across a designer suit which new had cost £1200, it was stunning, but is now on sale at just under £100 having been worn for 3 hours (apparently the lady changed for the evening do!!) and then dry cleaned. There are ways of cutting costs if you want to find them.

But has she contacted the papers for them to do an article on her!!;)

I was listening to the Jeremy Vine Show on the radio in work afew weeks ago, and apparently the latest big thing is to arrive at your school prom on a disability scooter. This fella rang in and he runs a mobility scooter hire firm and he has to put notices up to tell people that he doesn't hire them out on a kind of recreational basis as he says he gets loads of queries at this time of year for proms (apparently they're also popular for stag do's and the like). :rotfl::rotfl:

    Jx
And it looks like we made it once again
Yes it looks like we made it to the end

I replied because I thought that said 'taxi' and now I see it doesn't, nonetheless that's probably what DSD will be going in when it's time for her leaver's ball if her (taxi driver) dad has anything to do with it :D

One girl I know takes prom very seriously, and her mum has been using it as a carrot to encourage her to revise for her GCSEs! The dress, hair, nails etc. are her reward for her GCSE results, which she hasn't got yet of course but her mum knows that she put in the effort and went to revision classes etc.

Whilst the name may be Americanised, the concept is certainly not new - private schools have been having school balls for decades.

I went to an independant school back in the days of government assisted places (1980s-90s). As a result, the pupils were from a wide social mix (there were more people in my class whose family didn't have a car than the national average). At the end of sixth form, after our A-levels, we were invited back to school. Wearing our normal school uniforms which was a suit, we were given our Old Boy's tie which we put on. The head master made a speach in the school hall about how we were always welcome back, especially if we came with tangible gifts. We then made our own way, mainly by bus, to an old hall which was part of the university, where our Valedictory Lunch was held. Following speaches, we headed into town in groups for a few drinks, then home. Total cost was about a pound in bus fares, and maybe ten pounds on drinks.

I don't think so....she just has expensive taste!! The outfit is lovely and she looks great in it, and it is her cash to spend, it just seems a lot of money to me for one afternoon!! Each to their own.:D
