Do you ever go on the DFW board?

That £99.25 would probably feed a family of 4 for a fortnight.
    What choice do they make?
No food for a fortnight or daughter/son doesn't go to the prom?

I appreciate that it must be nice for young girls to feel special and pampered but not every family are in the position to be able to afford even just the price of the ticket.

And PoppyOscar did start off this (very interesting) thread about cost and shallowness of some of the girls.
I knew that my daughters prom was going to be at the start of June so I put a few quid away each week from September onwards, just as I do for christmas and just as anyone would be advised to do on the DFW board for any big spend they have coming up.

So it wouldn't ever be a choice of eating or going to the prom for us, and no I'm not rolling in it and am on a DMP myself.
  • Well my daughter's prom (sorry, Year 11 Ball) is tonight.

Dress reduced in the sale to 50% + TCB
Shoes from shoezone as they went best with the dress and were a height she can actually walk in (the fact they were also the cheapest helped :p )
    Hair salon up-do
White Daimler hire (shared between 3)
    Ball ticket

    Nails done by me
    Make up by me
Pre-Prom Party at her friend's house (including parents)

I knew the potential expense but budgeted for it as it's a formal occasion to mark the end of school and moving on into adult life.
As it is, I budgeted too much and there's money left in the pot :D

I am quite glad I only had sons!!

That said, there are some lovely prom dresses around at quite reasonable prices and once worn you can pop them on Ebay for someone else to enjoy next year.

    That made me smile.

My daughter told me that some of the shoes were so high that the girls could not walk in them and they had to take them off to dance, they then had to hold their dresses up while they danced.

My daughter wants to keep hers - probably will never wear it again though. Although she says she will if we go on a cruise!!

Somehow my daughter has ended up with a sensible head screwed onto her shoulders :p and she has already asked me if we should ebay the dress or keep it!
    I said to keep it.

Tbh, I still do that on occasion. Heels are so pretty but not really practical after a few hours of wear. It makes my husband so cross that sometimes he won't let* me wear them! (*By "let", I mean that sometimes he's driven to say: "This time you definitely can't blame me for 'letting' you wear those shoes!" lol)

You may be surprised how much wear they do get out of it: They'll probably have formal nights at uni and works dinner dances at the very least. My children all went to balls, mess nights, awards presentations, themed fancy dress parties etc and out came "old faithful" for another airing!:D

    That is good.

My daughter wanted high heels but we said no and I think she was glad we did in the end.

I was also really glad the other day as she went to a party and one of the boys told her he liked the way she dressed as she looked smart , that he did not really like to say it, but that her friend looked like a tart. She looks up to this particular friend and this did make her think about the way she dresses.15 is such an impressionable age.

oh I hope so, it is such a beautiful dress it would be a shame for it to never see the light of day again.
