Compression joints, properly fitted, should only need a dab of jointing compound, at worst, around the olive before tightening.

    UPDATE

Gas Safe coming to do an inspection on 20th July. Installer not going to be present, chose not to have him here.

Can Gas Safe MAKE him do any repairs?

Hi: see the GSR Sanctions and Complaints policies at the bottom of this page.

From here, I cannot comment on what is safe, but looks wise, the job is a mess.

There is not much in our trade that has to look right, as usually most is hidden under floorboards etc.

I do not like using compression joints as they are ugly. A few boiler manufacturers supply compression fittings to make the final connection joint to the boiler tails, Vaillant 400 series springs to mind, but other than that I only use them at low level to connect onto a pipe where I cannot remove all the water before soldering.

Your boiler has joints with nuts to tighten on it anyway, underneath it.

The magnetic filter is squeezed in and as said by others access could be very limited.

Also access to the servicing cover on the top could be problematic in the future, although this is not something that has to be done every year on these boilers if the FGA results are ok.

If you have any problems with the boiler, your warranty will be intact, but if the engineer cannot access the parts then he can refuse to carry out the work.

These are good little boilers, just a shame it is a shoddy installation.

You will probably find that GSR will be very picky, highlighting things that split hairs over whether they are right or wrong. They have to be seen to be doing their job, but most of their report will be made up of insignificant hair splitting, so don't get too worried when you first read it.

My last inspection got a defect notice due to a shrub partially blocking the gas meter cupboard door and the (and I use the term very loosely) inspector got his trousers dirty. As someone who speaks his mind freely, I had a half hour row with him, telling him exactly what I thought of his capabilities and asked whether I was supposed to be a effing gardener now as well! I complained to the head of GSR, whom I knew at the time and this 'defect notice' was removed from my file and the 'inspector' duly chastised.

Show me a boiler installation that would be classed as perfect and I'll show you a liar. We can all find some minor, insignificant detail to pick holes in anybody's installation work.

The GSR inspector may be able to quote all the rules and regs off by heart, but ask him to actually do the job and I wonder what he would answer?

Perhaps now this will give a bit of insight into what we have to work under.

It's a pity they don't put the same vigour into chasing illegal gas workers!

Am I best off forgoing Gas Safe and just getting the installer to come back and fix his shoddy work? I can give him a list of what you have all told me on here? What do you think?

eg put the pipe inside the house not outside etc

Hi: if you carry on with the GSR inspection, perhaps your 'RGI' will wake up after a figurative kick to the backside and do a decent install for the next customer ( and without all the faffing about you have had to endure over the last few weeks). Unfortunately, some installers have very low standards and most customers wouldn't know the difference.

Let us know how it goes.

I just want this over and done with. Including the installer sorting this mess. GS cannot come round for 2 weeks
