Hair Salon Got dye on my bag.... PLEASE HELP

Hi!

Please can someone help! I recently visited a salon to have my hair coloured Red… a bright red (the colour I already am) the girl that was doing it seemed massively disinterested and was more wanting to get done quickly so she could get out the door and out to the pub.

Any how she put on a semi permanent colour which didn’t lift my dark roots at all. Then to top it off she had slopped red hair dye over my Paul Smith bag – that cost me £695!!! I was furious, I wasn’t rude to her but I explained I was unhappy her response was ‘ Well my bag isn’t my responsibility but your hair is, so if your unhappy I can re book you’ I declined a re book as what would make the 2nd time different? Worst is I had even called the salon prior to booking to ensure had a bright red and was assured they had. When I got there they had 3 reds not that red really! So all in all I ended up with my hair looking darker and roots still there, with red hair dye on my bag!

I left the salon and called up to complain, at the time I just had to get out as the girls attitude was shocking. They agreed to take it to be cleaned. They took it to be cleaned and never got back to me, I called them 2 weeks later and they said oh yes it is here to collect.

I went to fetch it and the owner of the shop wasn’t there but the girl who did my hair was. she come over and screwed her face up at me saying ‘we have done our best and that’s all we can do’ The stain itself hadn’t fully come out and was still visible. I asked if Lisa the owner was about and she said no but did say she was self employed so nothing to do with Lisa. I told her I wasn’t happy still and her response was ‘well I don’t understand how you can moan as it isn’t like it is even a new bag’

The bag itself is about 2 years old and is a little worn on the bottom, but from my point of view the bag cost £695 and still has loads of life left in it. anyone who knows Paul Smith will know this, plus I saved ages for it, yes it was a lot but that was my choice to save my pennies for nearly a year to afford it! she tried to make me feel stupid.

I told her then, right well I will look to claim on you public liability insurance, she then reverted back to speaking to Lisa (owner), I asked why as she had already said she was self employed but she said she wanted to check with Lisa on how could be done as she didn’t feel I could claim as it was a old bag.

After another week of waiting, Lisa called me, she said that the hairdresser would be prepared to pay me £100 compensation and said they have spoke to the insurance and they have said they would want to see the bag first as they would only take it on if the bag was completely ruined and would also want to see proof of purchase and that if I did want to claim I would need to appoint a solicitor, she was trying to put me off saying if I lost the case I would be liable for all solicitors fees. I asked why I needed a solicitor to which she said your dealing with insurance, so that’s what you need to do??
I also don’t have my receipt, it was 2 years ago but I imagine I can get Paul Smith to verify the cost.

Can anyone help on this. I feel like I am being penalised for daring to shout up that they have ruined my bag. I understand the bag isn’t brand new and is still in essence useable but it looks bad with the mark, it is bigger than a 50p coin and is visible. I know it is there!

Please help! Any advice would be useful!

Have you looked at your household insurance? Check to see if covers over priced bags.

Why is this on the Credit Card board? Did your hairdressing cost more than £100 and did you use a card to pay?

Whatever happens you won't get the price of a new bag. The most you would get would be the difference between the cost of second-hand bag that was worn at the bottom and that of a second-hand bag that was worn at the bottom with a small stain.

Expensive handbags are like cars, once you've bought them, they lose 60% of their value.

Then you have wear and tear.

So your bag is probably worth around £100 (maybe less) and you were offered £100 compensation. Take it and run, but I'd advise never to go back to that salon.

Surely, when you were sitting in the chair and had your hair dyed you and your clothing were protected not only by a gown, but by a plastic cloak as well.

Why didn't you put the bag on your lap (under the cloak)?

£695 for something to dance round?

    Jesus.

Money saving tip of the day: don't spend that much on a handbag again.

(the small claims court would order a compensation figure equal to the second hand value of the bag - if you can't agree this with them you may need to go to court to get what you want)

It's true that the OP is only entitled to compensation for the second hand value of the bag BUT £100 may not be reasonable. I would be inclined to have a look on eBay and see what bags like it are going for second hand.

I know my sister has a couple of Mulberry bags and she sold them for £300-£400 used.

I don't mean to sound unreasonable, but why take such a handbag to get your hair dyed. I certainly wear old clothes to get mine done, just in case of splashes. My hairdressers also displays a disclaimer with regards to the chemicals. There's so many chemicals in a salon that any of them splashing on clothing could cause damage.

You may be entitled to some sort of compensation, but I feel that people also need to take responsibility for their own actions. If you were painting your house, you take care to cover the stuff that's valuable, why not either cover the handbag or leave it at home.

Or maybe it's just the fact that I would never pay that for a handbag in the first place. I don't know. But... oh dear, I best !!!!!! now.

Take the 100.00, you are unlikely to get anymore for the bag. Has the owner seen your hair, if not I would be inclined to ask her for an appointment and see what she has to say about it and what she offers to put it right.

The fact that the girl says she is self employed has no bearing, she was operating under the umbrella of the owners Salon, it is the owners responsibility.

  • I don't know how it happened, but somehow I must have moved on from the MONEY SAVING website I was on, to something about overpriced handbags.

£695 for a handbag? Are you insane?

Take the £100 offered and buy yourself some £20 handbags that you wont mind if they get accidently damaged.

What would concern me more is that the hair salon didn't have the actual colour you wanted but you carried on and let them do your hair in a different shade. Why?

I think what you might learn from this is not to spend £695 on a handbag!!
