I have some sympathy with your situation because it is very easy to get into a catch-22 with car tax and insurance, and I agree the way things are done now penalises those who can't afford a home with off-street parking - but you've either been very unlucky or this car has been untaxed for some time.
Did you buy it from a trader or privately? A reputable trader wouldn't release the car without tax.
When I bought my car from a trader, they said "yeh wil b fine, just show receipt of purchase to police". I insisted that they tax it for me on my expense. They did.
To the op. I didn't read the whole tread, so maybe someone already suggested it - Contact last owner, so he could tax it for you.0 -
Vax, is this your bizarre theory that the DVLA owns all our vehicles?
In that case can you ask them to come round to my house and fix the dodgy handbrake on 'their' car?
And give it a wash.

Its all FMOTL stuff. The theory goes that the word 'register' (from the latin 'regis', king) conveys ownership or title to goods, hence when you 'register' a car with the DVLA it conveys ownership or title to the car to the Crown, who then agrees to lend it back to you. Hence you are the 'registered keeper' and not the 'owner'. And also the reason that when the police or DVLA seize the vehicle its not theft because they are taking back the crowns property.
That the theory, anyway. I dont think it ever stopped them siezing an untaxed or deregistered vehicle.**** I hereby relieve MSE of all legal responsibility for my post and assume personal responsible for all posts. So how does the gas safe register work? Do they own all the plumbers? FSA register?0

It wouldn't be theft anyway. There is no dishonesty when the police or dvla seize a vehicle.0 -

If you had said "There shouldn't be any dishonesty"......0 -

Do you have evidence they're 100% squeaky clean?0 -
