Car towed for no tax just after I bought it

This is why many adverts where the car has no tax, state "willing to tax at buyers expense". In hindsight you should have just got the seller to tax it for you and given him the cash. The general procedure when buying an untaxed car is :
Agree to buy car
Give the seller cash to tax the car, which also acts as a deposit
Return to pick up car once tax is bought and you've sorted your insurance and taken the cash out of the the bank or transfered the money to the seller a few days later.
However, as atrixblue states you only need the slip you retained from the V5 for proof of ownership, so you should be able to tax it once you have your insurance docs.0 -
We recently bought a car without tax, this is what we did.
Look at car, agree to buy it, pay for it, leave it at the sellers house, on his drive.
Take new keeper supplement, and M.O.T. With us.
Phone our insurer, Tesco, they tell me they now cover both cars for 24 hours, to allow you time to change over. This is a free service that they offer.
I ask Tesco to email me a copy of the certificate, they do so. I print this out
Take insurance, M.O.T. and new keeper section to post office, tax car.
Within 2 hours, we have taxed and collected the car.
It's really not hard to do.
O.P. you get no sympathy from me.0 -
People were probably querying your use of the word 'recently' because you said...Ok so your saying from your post that I should buy the car from him and tell him that he must keep it on his drive for 4-6 weeks until I manage to sort the tax out???
I know you said otherwise, but is that the time you had it sitting on the road with no tax and insurance?0 -

Bedsit Bob - Sorry to be frank but after some of the replies on here I feel that way now. To begin with as previously stated it was a private sale and I cannot go back in time and change how I bought the car and therefore your question is irellevant!0
