Car towed for no tax just after I bought it
Hi All
I desperately need someones help. I recently bought a car and as soon as I bought it I got fully comprehensive insurance on it. It has a current MOT but doesn't have tax. It was today towed away and impounded for the no tax. However, the DVLA still don't have it in my name as they say it can take 4-6 weeks to process and that's if the guy I bought the car from sent it off straight away. My insurance documents haven't arrived yet and the post office I went to to get my tax told me I had to bring in original insurance documents to prove my insurance. So I cannot get my tax at the post office and cannot order it online as it still isn't in my name. I live in a terraced house and so don't have a driveway and therefore cannot take it off the road. I just think this is SO unfair. I could buy the tax today its not like I'm trying to avoid it. The impound are going to want hundreds of pounds from me to get my car back and I cannot do it yet as they will want to see the tax first. Plus they conveniently close at 16:30 just before I was able to call them so I will have to wait until the morning.
Anyone at all have any advice?
Thanks, Tony.

sorry but thats the rules.surely you knew it had no tax when you bought it.
you knew you cud not tax it till it was insured.cos you have to produce mot and insurance etc docs.
so why park it on public highway.
you should have thought i am going to buy it but where do i store it.
it beggars believe that you are crying now its been taken.
i assume you have been driving quite a while not just passed test,so therefore you should know the rules.
sorry but got no sympathy your fault and nobody else's.
just noticed it has mot and you insured it straight away so why was it not taxed there and then.
you really have no reasons or excuses0 -
you got the green slip off the v5 and purchase reciept yes, thats proof of ownership.
you need a policy certificate the green slip and mot to tax a car, you cant take in a printed copy of a purchase of insurance and policy number, they just wont have it.
ask your insurers to e-mail you your policy certificate, and print that out, most post offices will accept those as insurers become more online about things rather than posting documants.
pay the fine, and storage, then contact the DVLA for an apeal, be prepared for it to be rejected a car not taxed in the public domain is removable by way of towing or clamping or both.0 -
Find it amazing that people like yourself, briclegg, bother to come on these forums lay the law down and act all high and mighty yourself like you are the meaning of perfection! Ever heard the saying, if you don't have anything constructive to say then don't say anything at all.
COk so your saying from your post that I should buy the car from him and tell him that he must keep it on his drive for 4-6 weeks until I manage to sort the tax out??? Please re-read my post as it states your last paragraph shows you didn't read it thoroughly enough! Yes insured and yes MOT'd. Unable to get tax on the internet as not in my name yet at the DVLA and the post office told me I couldn't do it there until I had insurance docs through which I am still awaiting!0 -
It would help if you were more precise about timing - how long ago is 'recently', how long was it on the road for? did you drive it other than to park it up? did DVLA initially clamp it and only tow away later?
I have some sympathy with your situation because it is very easy to get into a catch-22 with car tax and insurance, and I agree the way things are done now penalises those who can't afford a home with off-street parking - but you've either been very unlucky or this car has been untaxed for some time.
Did you buy it from a trader or privately? A reputable trader wouldn't release the car without tax.Long-haul Supporters DFW 120

Thank you atrixblue. I will be contacting them in the morning to retrieve my car back hopefully within 24 hours so the charge won't be so bad. The lady at the post office when I first tried did insist they wanted the official posted documents and only accepted emailed/online documents from swiftcover (i'm with tescos). Will give it another try and give the appeal a go then. Thanks again.0

Billy no money, although I state 'recently' bought the car that would rather suggest it was recent other than in your reply when you ask has the car been untaxed for 'some time.'
It happens to be a few days ago or precisely Sunday. It was bought privately and no it was taken immediately by a recovery firm.0 -
Check with the DVLA on-line if the car shows as taxed, the old disc may not expire until the end of the month.
Not displaying is a separate offence, if the vehicle is still taxed then the decision to seize (take back for breaking terms of trust) the vehicle was wrongHi, we’ve had to remove your signature. Hi Vax, I spoke to the DVLA today who confirmed two thing. One - it isn't taxed and two - it isn't yet registered in my name.0
