Car towed for no tax just after I bought it

Taking the OP on face value, another good example of why local DVLA offices should be kept.

The refusal by the PO to accept a printed certificate was ignoring the change in the law (NOT just a change in DVLA policy) that makes home printed certificates acceptable.

The (emailed and printed) certificate and "new owners" slip is enough to get tax from either a Post Office or local DVLA office regardless of who's name the car is in. If the Post Office won't accept it then go to the DVLA office (who will accept it) and then put a complaint in to the PO about their staff not knowing the current rules.

If you're incredibly unlucky and get towed while all this is going on then I'm afraid it's just that - incredibly bad luck under the general banner of "!!!! happens".

Unlike some earlier posters, I do have some sympathy for you because I agree that the rules as written are a mess and make it too easy for this sort of thing to happen. But they are the rule and most people don't fall foul of them unless they're chancing it.

That doesn't make it ok when someone gets caught out by genuine bad luck but it does maybe explain some of the earlier reactions. I just hope none of those immediately assuming "guilt" ever get caught by something similar themselves ;)
  • If so called uncle was working as instructed by garage, then for this journey car is insured.

It's still a breach of the Trade Plate regs, for which said Uncle, and the Trade Plate owner (if not one and the same) could be prosecuted.
  • Terms and conditions for the insurance is that the vehicle is taxed.

So how would you get an untaxed vehicle to an MOT

So you are allowed to drive an uninsured car to a test station?

    No you are not.
    Ie without tax.

    That's a different matter.

Bear in mind though, that the OP was already in breach of the law, before he even tried to tax the car.

His Uncle was also in breach of the Trade Plate regs.

The OP could have avoided all this hassle, if he had got the previous RK to tax the car for him.

Of course, knowing that now doesn't help the OP, but it's a lesson learned for the future.

Google trust law, you will see why they can "seize" what we think are our cars.

Vax, is this your bizarre theory that the DVLA owns all our vehicles?

In that case can you ask them to come round to my house and fix the dodgy handbrake on 'their' car?

    And give it a wash.

    Ta :D

Having no tax does not invalidate the insurance. Think about it... you cannot tax it without insurance DERRRR!
