The more I see of this the less I believe the "glitch" theory - and I'm almost with the "don't believe everything you are being told brigade" at this stage!

Trust me, there's no truth at all in the various conspiracy theories doing the rounds, or the rumours about hacking, etc. This was 100% an IT cockup caused by human error, which (unfortunately) is very easily done - where RBS etc. have really screwed up here is in their complete lack of a backout plan or contingency plan, and apparently in their complete lack of experienced IT staff to resolve the problem.

And the reason it's hit Ulster Bank harder is because of the way their daily batch processing was set up to always run Ulster Bank transactions last, and the fact that RBS knew fine well they needed to sort their own customers out first before Ulster Bank because it would get a lot more media attention. Therefore, they obviously got RBS and NatWest resolved first before even starting to look at the Ulster Bank batches, which had been sitting in a queue for ages while they were sorting out RBS.

You've been entirely shafted by RBS here. It's not even necessarily unique to RBS either - the same thing may well have happened if this had been (for example) Nationwide and you had been a customer of one of the smaller building societies which they took over. It all depends on how (and if) they integrated their systems when the takeover happened.

Added to the fact of course that they offshored a lot of their IT to India.

Ha ha! thanks D A I do trust you - but you can understand why even a (normally!) rational customer might be over analysing this! In my days with Ulster Bank - way way back in the day - if postings got behind we played catch-up yes - but in DATE order! It is very hard to believe that computers/programmers/"the IT experts" aren't able to do that...

My account is showing transactions up to 2 July - but with transactions in between missing (noticeably the ones involving larger amounts £1k +) and no pay - which was due in TWO weeks ago showing as yet.

Melontwist (on the Nat West thread) said this! -

They are being applied in batch runs. The "work" has been processed it just needs to be run through the system in date order. If as an ulster customer you are stuck, you can use your card or your cheque book to withdraw funds from a natwest or rbs branch if needs be.

Just wish we could believe it was as straightforward as this!

This morning my account is showing as only £9 overdrawn,...This I think is the real figure as it appears that some of the ATM or Debit card transactions I made (I'm thinking the last two & only for about a fiver each time, cat food & petrol) were done after checking my account balance & showing more than I had in my account.Partly my fault but mostly the screw up by the Ulster.Applied for a Barclays account yesterday online....

IT seems like Ulster Bank has set aside a signifant amount of compensation for this, according to the BBC. I know it doesnt turn back the clock but they should pay for this to all affected customers, plus compensation for the massive incovenience caused

    We will see

I was thinking along the same lines having received (out of the blue), PIN nos for contactless debit cards from Barclays a couple of days ago. Our Standard Life mortgage is moving to them after the takeover and apparently we get a Woolwich current account tagged on to it whether we want it or not! What a way to run a business...

But, yes BigAl94 I wonder is this another poisoned chalice? Does anyone in our NI backwater (or so it would seem) have any experience of banking with Barclays here - given the limited number of branches in the province.

Well O2 have charged me a £10.50 reconnection fee because I couldn't pay my bill on time & got my home phone & 'ternet cut off because of this fiasco....
  • Well, no sign of last month's pay yet (should have been in on the 22nd at the latest) but regular debits are listed in early July .... !!!!!!!

Lucky I had enough in the account to cover automated outgoings but what on earth are they doing as regards all the earlier (around the 20th) transactions?
