Good for you for putting your foot down and not playing their narcissistic games because what society badly needs in my opinion, is that the idea of 'respect', isn't just reserved for the under 35's.
Why do you think this is, we have always brought them up to be respectful. I can remember one incident when youngest son was a child and he and some other children were rude to someone, we made him ring that person and apologize and the other parents didn't do that. Having said that, I think he is respectful to other people just not to us.He seems to want to dominate and control us. It's only when he doesn't get his own way that he kicks off.0 -
Its complex. Partly to do with 'entitlement', I think; in the sense that more people these days appear to have a stronger sense of rights than they do of responsibilities.
Factor in an element of arrogance - in that they think they know best and that whatever you say/do/think has a 'lesser', quality to it than their own view of the world - and you've a recipe for communication breakdown of seismic proportions.
There's an element of old fashioned envy to add to the mix - in that you've achieved in life what they're still striving to accomplish and add a sprinkling of old fashioned ageism - how can you know better than them? You're the older generation for heavens sake!! What do you know!!
There's also the cultural aspect. The Faceache generation do love a bit of drama and can be found 'liking' and 'unliking' their lives away.
Sometimes, this obsession with being seen to be 'important', spills over into the day to day and normal interactions can and do become impossible.
I suppose....its the generation gap on one level...on another level, don't you find so many of them completely lacking in a sense of humour? Must admit I find so many do take themselves far too seriously - but then that adds to the drama aspect I expect..0 -
some good points made in the post above ^^
I think the goggle-box has an insidious effect on society. Drip-feeding people a view of life that just doesn't match reality.0 -
desert Rose you are spot on in everything you say. Faceache generation - I love that:T And J.e.j. you are as well, we can't stand Big Brother , TOWIE etc but they are the kind of things they love to watch.0

If, when you come back, they're still no better behaved to you, then maybe the stops along your cruise might've given you inspiration as to where you might like to move to...
If you're serious about spending their inheritance (and so you should, it's your money!), what about 90 nights away:

lauraandclive, that is a lovely idea, my OH has always wanted to go on a cruise but I don't think I could be away from my home and my dog for that long. We have been looking to go for perhaps 7 to 14 nights though. Have you been on one? Can you recommend a good one?
I thought twice about buying something for myself yesterday, as I always do, but then I thought ,why not, it will only end up going to that lot to fritter away, so I bought it.0
