Strapless - yes or no?

  • I guess you'd only care about revealing too much in church if you cared about religion...and since when were shoulders rude anyway?....

In all religious buildings I've been in (including Hindu temples, RC Churches abroad, CofE, Synagogues) sleeveless/revealing/legs above the knee are not encouraged, and some buildings will either deny you entry or offer you cover-ups to borrow. Many religious buildings you must cover the head in some way.

Simple respect really - modest attire doesn't have to mean full burkha effect ;)

I feel the same about similar ceremonies - ie funerals, christenings, namings, bar mitzvahs.

But then I also feel the same about most social occasions - I love to see glamorous strapless dresses at a ball or ritzy evening event but in my own personal opinion I'm not a fan of them for weddings for the reasons above, and that's my 2p worth :D
  • Because your OH to be is religious? Or (and I think this is horribly hypocritical and cannot condone it!!) you're getting married in a church because it's pretty?

Then you should respect his/her religion :P And the second reason... don't even get me started on it!
Strapless dresses can be classy, I just don't understand why all of a sudden shoulders appear to be rude and disrespectful...? :rotfl:though again I'm a great fan of boleros.

Nakedness in a church is disrespectful, at least in a Catholic church. It's just polite to cover your arms. Can be done with a bolero, but I hate boleros. :P

Kate M did look very nice...but the dress was in the style of someone about 20 years older than she is. I'd have dressed her more like her bridesmaid and put Pippa in something else :)

Her dress was perfect, not at all for an old person. I would have worn it in a second, and I was 28 when I got married, so not that old :P Pippa's dress was pretty too. The simple dresses are the most elegant. I specifically avoided any crystals, sequins, drapes and so on - didn't want to look like a giant cream cake :P
    From Poland...with love.

    They are (they're)
    sitting on the floor.
    Their
books are lying on the floor.
The books are sitting just there on the floor.

I loved Pippa's dress, as did most red-blooded men up and down the country! haha! I do totally agree that the simple, elegant dresses are the best - and the most flattering. I'm not very "girly" anyway, but when I watch things like Big Fat Gypsy Weddings I fall about laughing at some of the sparkly meringues. Light-up butterflies? Please!

I have absolutely no time for religion (any religion at all), you might have guessed that by now, but I was respectful when I was best "man" at a Catholic wedding, I wore a suit and everything ;)

Is that a given? Or is that your opinion?

Genuine question, I'm not particularly religious and can't remember the last time I saw the inside of a church tbh.

Just wondered if that was something you felt strongly about or if it was up there with the 10 commandments kind of thing. :)

I know from visiting abroad and being given scarves etc to cover up, it was very obvious when we went to Rome.

I think its a personal thing, people view modesty in different ways. I agree that the BFG's go seriously OTT, but I dont see the problem with a little bit of shoulder. Being in a strapless dress doesnt mean you'll have your lady pillows out for all to see.
  • What about over here though? I'm sure there was a strapless dress at a Catholic wedding I saw last year :S

I was at a catholic wedding recently where the bride wore a strapless dress.
