Strapless - yes or no?

I would expect nothing less from the Daily Misogynist than yet another article deriding women for how they look and what they wear.
Presumably anyone close enough to the bride or groom to have been invited to share their wedding day is not bitter and twisted enough to !!!!! about wide shoulders, back fat and hoiking.0 -
Its all in the fitting. I had darts put into the bust on my strapless dress so it had a more 50'ish shape to it. It was also taken in at the sides but i wanted the bust taken in and the tailor i had adjusting it suggested the darts which worked perfectly. I was not hoiking it up (mums scottish) at all infact i had a comment on my wedding day from my cousin saying i really love your dress and your the only bride i have seen recently who has not had to keep pulling it up every 5 minutes. I had a zipper back with far to many buttons down the back to cover it which i think helped. We did have to keep adjusting the corset back bridesmaid dresses as they kept loosening off perhaps we didn't have the knack of tightening them right. I did have an issue when i sat down with some spillage under the arms but it was just the boning really. I barely sat down all day so was only when eating really. I had a bolero in church and i really liked the photos with it over the dress as it really balanced my shape flatteringly.0

I agree with those who've said that it should be about what you like/feel comfortable in and what suits you. I've never looked at a bride wearing a strapless dress and thought, "Ugh, that looks horrible," because they always looked so happy and in-love that they could have been wearing a sack and would still have looked beautiful. It's really down to what feels right for you.
I am probably going to end up with a strapless dress because I'm leaning towards a knee length 50s prom-style dress due to being a bit paranoid that a long dress will make me look like I've been hammered into the ground (although I say that now and watch me end up with a meringue!), and most of those are strapless. I'm a bit conscious of my arms so will be trying to tone them up before the wedding but if it doesn't come off then there are plenty of pretty little shrugs and boleros out there that can be used to cover up if needed/wanted..."A mind needs books as a sword needs a whetstone, if it is to keep its edge." - Tyrion LannisterMarried my best friend 1st November 2014Loose = the opposite of tight (eg "These trousers feel a little loose")Lose = the opposite of find/gain (eg "I'm going to lose weight this year")0 -
OK, so, to summarise:
Each to their own and all brides look beautiful and radiant on their wedding day no matter what they wear
Some peeps feel that there isn't enough non-strapless choice in the shops
An ill-fitting or poor quality dress (strapless or not) looks awful

I think that pretty much sums it up Wanchai!
I'm another bride who hates her arms and has big boobs and although I didn't choose it conciously, the dress I've fallen in love with (athough not ordered or even tried on :rotfl:) has sleeves. It's very me if you know what I mean.
I'd love to try on a few strapless ones as I've heard the internal corsetry does wonders... will have to try and fit that inCross Stitch Cafe Challenger No. 26 :hello:XStitch to do list:-- Birth Sampler -- Christmas Angel -- Mum's Xmas Stitch -- Christmas decs 3 & 4 -- Xmas Bird ---- Snowflake Sonata -- Be Jolly -- JE Unicorn -- Start HAED!!! --0 -
I have tried on a few dresses and have found personally that because of my bigger boobs I don't feel that I look as good in the strapless options and certainly don't feel as confident, but then again, maybe I just haven't found the right one yet!0

I'm in agreement that there aren't enough dresses with straps on them on the market. And quite often the ones I found were vintage looking with lace or chiffon (I have a buddha belly even if i diet so would need some serious shapewear for these = feeling self conscious all day) or just plain old fashioned taffeta monstrosities. So I plumped for a strapless dress. I hate my arms but at least I know I can tone them so they look half decent.0

Considering it's the DM, what a sensible article!
Strapless dresses are so unflattering for most women and they nearly all look the same, just with the odd bit of sequins different.0 -
don't see the problem myself:0
