Strapless - yes or no?

I don't like, and I didn't want, a strapless dress for a variety of reasons (lack of boobs to hold the dress up, bingowings, tan lines (wedding abroad) etc.
I would never say that another bride looked awful in a strapless dress. BUT I HAVE seen some brides that shouldn't (in my opinion) have worn a strapless dress. However, if they loved it, and felt great in it, then good on them. (Edit again: not sure that makes sense - I've seen brides that, in my opinion, shouldn't wear strapless. BUT they liked it, felt good and special, so, good on them.)
The availability of strapless rather than strappy/strapped dresses is purely down to fashion, isn't it? Give it a year or so and the fashion (i.e. copying Kate (Edit: Middleton, not Moss - though Kate Moss' dress is not unlike mine)) will be for strapped, and anyone who wants a strapless dress will have to hunt high and low for one!
Maybe. I think. In my opinion. Don't kill me.....please.If you have nothing constructive to say just move along.0 -
The vast majority of women don't suit strapless dresses no matter how well fitted they are. They look wrong and untidy and constantly you see the woman having to pull at them. Not glamorous at all (in my opinion!). What's wrong with having a decent strap or sleeves.Lost my soulmate so life is empty.
I can bear pain myself, he said softly, but I couldna bear yours. That would take more strength than I have -

It was either in the article or a comment underneath it I read the other day that said strapless dresses are easiest to adjust and make as they are the least complicated style so they can be churned out quicker and cheaper that more complex styles. Wedding dress makers will be hoping the fashion lasts.
Personally I do like the look of them in a princess kind of way but they are made rapidly unattractive by people howking at their boobs and hoiking it up all the time when people have ill fitting ones.If you always do what you have always done, you will always get what you always got!0 -

I totally agree with this, seeing someone wiggling their bum and pulling up their dress every 5 mins is not a good look.Forty and fabulous, well that's what my cards say....0 -
Just thought I'd add that this doesn't just apply to the wedding dress - it applies to what women wear in general! To me it seems like a lot of women confuse getting into something with the item of clothing fitting.... Plenty of wedding guests or people going out look squashed into things. If anything, this happens less with wedding dresses as they get fitted.
I don't think all strapless look bad, not by any means, but it is frustrating to see so few other options out there. Plenty of ones with sleeves are sheer or lace so you can't wear a bra anyway. It's a massively important day so why do so many dress shops try to make you look like an identikit bride?! You can find other dresses, but the vast majority are so similar and you have to hunt. Plenty of friends have gone for bridesmaid dresses in white or ivory as that gave them the choice they wanted.:happyhear0 -

My daughter is having a strapless dress, she is normal sized and said she didnt feel the need to hoik it up at all because of the lace up fastening at the back.

I'm agreeing with Gleeful here. I always wanted a strapless dress and I have to say when trying it on I think I look very nice and it suits me very well. I have quite big boobs, my dress is a size 12, I'm not stick thin, have curves in the right places (apparently haha) and actually can't wait to put my pictures up to show that strapless gowns can look nice!!!
I get that everyone is different and things may not be for you. But because they're not for you doesn't mean they're not for others!Married my wonderful husband on 8/9/12 :j0 -
As a second time around bride, I had no idea what style of dress would suit me and I had definite ideas about what I did and didn't want in my dress.
However after visiting a wedding specialist shop and trying on a few different styles - I went completely against my original ideas. The dress is strapless but it fits properly, it moves with me, I dont leave it behind when I look over my shoulder or whatever. I'm not a skinny svelte person (though I wish I was!!) and I will be wearing a shrug with it for the ceremony plus believe it or not - I do feel the cold!!
I have seen many brides who have worn strapless dresses and some have been absolutely beautiful but ruined by the fact that they went for a dress which had not been adjusted to fit them snugly. I have also seen brides who are constantly 'hoiking' up their dresses which ruins the whole look.
It's not necessarily about fashion but how you wear fashion that dictates whether you look good in an outfit. After all some people can wear a bin liner and look fab!
