I don't think you've done badly really - £460 + the scrap. That fellow with the write offs sounds decidedly dodgy, I'd steer clear.

I know a new car and 80mpg is appealing but I think it would overall be more expensive than buying a car for £1k that does 35mpg, spending say £200 a year on repairs etc than paying finance for 5 years or whatever. Well done for sticking up to the insurance company...idiots...

You don't need to spend a grand to get a reliable car, a lot of my cars have been £250 - £400 and most have been great.

Just need to find someone who knows about older cars and which are the lemons. My current is a 1996 Rover 420 SD (diesel), which has a bombproof mechanically injected boat engine under the bonnet but will probably still be running when only cockroaches are left on the planet lol.

OK, that's helpful. As I've had a very old car for the past six years I am still tempted to get something newer. I guess sometimes the amount you spend is nothing to do with the real value or quality of the car. It's a bit of a gamble so maybe I'd better spend under 1k and as long as it has service history and MoT and I can't see anything obviously wrong I may have to take a bit of a chance.

I agree, made a profit on a £300 car!:D excluding of course the repairs it's had but even they were only bad over the past two years. I think that's when it started needing to have welding done and that was ideally the time to scrap it. Before then it was just parts etc and nothing major.

You're right on the mpg - I don't do high mileage anyway but with petrol prices being so high I'd like to get more mpg if I can. Otherwise will end up going out a lot less, which actually I notice a lot of people are doing nowadays. Not ideal.

Am going to start looking online today, may post links if I need an opinion if that's ok but I think I've got a good idea what is good value or not. I may well stick with Fiestas for now as I know they are reasonable cars and good to run about in. I don't have time to test drive different models etc but can always look in a more leisurely way in a few months' time if I at least get some wheels now.. :)

This dealer seems to have a few good offers. I'm looking for something with 12 months MOT and service history. I've seen a Saxo and a Polo also so will probably go there today. Never driven a Clio but a friend loved hers and she is similar size to me. Said it was comfortable for her to drive.

Although it's a non fault claim, you will have to disclose this claim when getting quotes for new insurance.

Hi thanks for letting me know, but I am aware of that. I hope it won't affect my premiums, as I have six years protected no claim discount.

I know what you mean, but you have to get into the mentality of remembering that it doesn't matter that your car does half the mpg when you paid a fraction of the price for it. Yeah fiestas are good. That clio looks alright, its an auto though, which I presume you don't mind...

Won't affect NCD but may affect your premium slightly because some insurance companies are !!!!!!!s like that.

Protected NCD is a separate issue (though your NCD shouldn't be impacted at all by this).

As far as your premium is concerned, do some dummy quotes online with and without this claim and see what difference it is making.

I think you will struggle to find a <£1,000 car with a service history.
