Third party cover - hit by another car

Hi Rev_henry, thanks for your responses.
Yes I think it may be 1.2 Corsa. I think I'll avoid that guy altogether - he seems to have loads of dodgy write offs that he gets from a place in Luton.:D. My neighbour bought a car from him which didn't let him down but for some reason he thinks the guy isn't ok to deal with, so I won't.
Going to be tricky if I'm in a hurry. Don't know whether i can persuade them to let me keep the courtesy car for longer. Guess I will have to try maybe an ombudsman or something.
Yes that car was a little miracle for me. I was lucky but have usually spent £250-400 on each MOT, especially past 3 years. It was getting a bit tired though.
spoke to a friend tonight who has a Citroen C1 and he gets 80mpg (diesel)! He recommends it, has done 80000 miles in his from new and still going strong. He thinks I might be better off getting a good finance deal on a new car, rather than looking at these old ones and spending money on them. What do you think? He pays £20 road tax and great mpg. I have so much research to do and test driving, but the more I see the rubbish out there and the more I have got used to my courtesy car:D the more I want something fairly new. I'm trying to sort out a mortgage now though so it would be very bad timing.0 -
Well they said today it is a standard 7 days car hire with that insurance company, so I;m paying for it myself from tonight for a few more days. I did get a call from them yesterday saying they were going to add £100 the payment, after receiving my service history documents. Probably standard to do this as they start with a lower offer, but nice anyway.
So from tomorrow I need to look for a car, without much idea of what to go for and even what age of car. I could go for something much newer if i can get a deal, just to save the hassle of having an old car which to be honest I was getting fed up of - ie not as pleasant to drive, no street cred whatsoever, in fact a bit of an embarrassment.
Ideally I shouldn't go over about £3-4k max and may just plump for something at £1k. It really depends on finance offers and also what is out there. Bit stuck at the mo really as I haven't had time to do the research and look forward to it, or save up.:)0 -

Don't you mean if you keep it?
If you keep it, then you can get the £40 when you scrap it.
If they take it, they get the £40, and you end up with just £360.0 -
You don't need to spend a grand to get a reliable car, a lot of my cars have been £250 - £400 and most have been great.
Just need to find someone who knows about older cars and which are the lemons. My current is a 1996 Rover 420 SD (diesel), which has a bombproof mechanically injected boat engine under the bonnet but will probably still be running when only cockroaches are left on the planet lol.0 -
Many thanks to all for replies, sorry I'm rushing out and about, will reply later.
Just had hassle from my new insurer which is giving me grief about cancelling (that insurance began the day after the accident). they say I have to prove it was not my fault. I did send them a letter with all details from the third party's insurer, with details of payment and the fact that my car is written off.
Heaven help me. Short of filming the scene at the time and interviewing witnesses there's not much more I can do. They say they have cancelled my insurance at my request but I bloody hope so, as if they cancel it is a massive black mark for me.
The insurer who paid me out had the cheek to ask me to send back the cheque by recorded delivery and wait for another, because my surname was incorrectly spelt. I refused and insisted they stop the cheque and send a new one out today. So still no payment; err I might just try and claim for the extra days with courtesy car through the financial ombudsman.. this is ridiculous!! Sorry for rant.0 -
