Right, yes it will need a VIC if its going cat C. VIC is just that - a vehicle identity check - to make sure its not a cut n shut or anything, nothing to do with road worthiness I understand. The MOT is another matter though. It seems your dealing direct with the third party's insurers yes? That's good, that's the best way to go. They're giving you a hire car - presumably for until you decide whether to accept whatever settlement from them?

Don't accept anything yet - I'd just string them along, keeping the hire car, until they come up with an offer that's acceptable to you.

I don't understand this salvage fee. Are you saying they'll take £40 off the payout if you keep the car, or they'll effectively charge you £40 to take it away?
Also I wouldn't drive it for now - just use the hire car...there may be an issue with your new insurance company (or any insurance company, for that matter) covering a cat C.

search auto trader ebay gumtree for the same spec car and mileage, once you have a few examples of how much theyre worth, then you should be asking them to put you back into the same position you were in before the accident. i.e same car spec and mileage costing £550 then thats what i would expect to c be paid out from the liable parties insurer if they refuse then i would send them these ads and make sure they come to an agreement.

    .

It's not as easy as that, adverts on auto trader etc are regarded as the starting price that people will haggle from. So if the adverts say £600 it might indicate the value as being say £500.

Obviously it's good to get the adverts, but you cannot expect to receive X as adverts say x

Hi yes, it wasn't until the third party's insurers phoned me that I understood what to do. My own insurer didn't even tell me I couldn't claim from them. I knew I was third party (now changed this to comp with new insurer) but it was the other party's fault so thought i'd have to go through my insurer to claim from theirs. Anyway yes third party dealing with now.

Thanks, that's ok then, I have to pay for the VIC but as long as it's not like an MOT it's probably fine. I may get my own mechanic to do a service if I'm keeping it on the road until the end of the year and he can let me know if anything looks unsafe, but it really looked like bodywork damage only and the boot door is also sticking now due to this.

Yes I keep the hire car until all agreed, though I am paying £6 a day (for my own peace of mind really), to take away the excess on the insurance cover for it - it's a brand new car so any scratch etc and i would be liable otherwise. Nice to drive for now but really not me! It's a new Corsa and very long and big - would never buy one as I think they are a bit cumbersome. :o

Salvage fee - ie if I keep the car I only get £360 for the car, but £400 if they keep it. rip off I know so I said I'd keep it, especially as it's driveable and even driving it to be scrapped would probably get me more money than £40.

I'd also keep my car even if replaciing it very soon as I still need something to drive around in to go and find a new car.

    Thanks for your help.

ok thanks, will bear this in mind. I am definitely going to haggle as my car was so reliable, had low mileage too. Was in very good condition for its age.

As said though, the scrap value is probably about the 130 mark, plus you can take the tax off it.

So if you can get them up to £550 then with the tax and scrap value then you should be reaching your new car budget.

Some insurers don't like Cat C cars or will charge you more to cover it so bear that in mind.

    5t.
What if there was no such thing as a rhetorical question?

Thanks. I am only a few days into my policy so may be better cancelling the insurance, will see how long it takes as I will obviously need to stop using it then! I have just had look on Autotrader and think it is around the £400-£500 mark. I doubt I would get more.

Would I be best to sell it on Ebay even for scrap value, do you know?

OK I see. It would still need a new MOT as well as the VIC though, I think. Yes it will be worth around £130 scrap. Actually have a look here:

I and a few others have used that site and found the service good.

At present, as you haven't agreed to anything, its not been cat c - ified so its insured ok. Though as soon as you agree to the cat C you'll lose the hire car and the insurance on the fiesta may be an issue! Sounds a good idea to speak to your new insurance company and ask what, if any, implications there are for insuring a cat c. They may say 'we're not bothered' they may say 'we won't cover it' or 'that'll be £500 extra please'.
You would probably get nearer £200 on ebay selling as spares/repairs yes, if you can be bothered.
So, course of action for now I would suggest holding out for a better offer, meantime deciding what to do with your current car depending on what your new insurer says. As previously said, don't forget to cash in the tax!

Hi rev-henry, ok so new insurer not too happy and have put up premium in the meantime. however if I cancel my insurance within 14 days I get a full refund (only started it on Sun and it was no fault accident). if I don't either cancel or get a new MOT they will cancel it, which is damaging for my insurance record. If I cancel then i have an uninsured car but I could try and insure elsewhere. maybe taking the offer from the third party plus going for scrap is best option. I doubt anyone would bother to buy and repair it. Does this sound like my best option to you? I have seen plenty of newer Fiestas with year's mot for £500 and lower mileage than mine so maybe it is a reasonable offer. Thanks

PS I didn't think I could dispute the Cat C? Can I take it elsewhere for an opinion and dispute this?

Yes that sounds a good plan. Cancel the insurance. Does it really matter that its uninsured for a few days? Or do you not have a driveway?

I wouldn't take the first offer from the insurance, try and up it a bit at least, they can only say no!

You'd be surprised what people will buy on ebay, if you can be bothered you'd almost certainly get more than scrap that way.
