hair removal (merged)

I've used one for years, but I never shaved my legs, so the hairs were fairly fine to start with! I don't feel any pain.
Do you know someone who has one they would let you try?
I know the pain gets easier with use, but at least it would give you some Idea if you would get used to using it!
Mine has prongs on that supposedly numb the skin before pulling the hair out.

I tried waxing at a salon, with the promise that after 6 to 8 months, my hair would be finer, grow back less often - big fib no change after 8 months.
For money saving reasons tried waxing at home - made lots of mess, and missed bits.
So tried using an epilator, mine cost about £45, not too painful and I don't have a very high pain threshold, I don't have a ice thingy, or exfoilate first or anything, as for results - I haven't notice that I am able to leave it longer each time between I use it and because it comes out at the roots, the hair grows back more coarsely. It can be quite time consuming too, my legs then do look a little raw.
TBH I have gone back to shaving, yes I have to do it more often but it is easier. I would buy a cheap one or borrow one, to test it first, but it isn't a miracle solution to hair removal and I don't think that I am more hairy than any of my friends.

I have one, one of the ones that have a light at the front so you can see any hairs you may have missed.
I think an area becomes numb to the pain after a bit. Underarms and bikini line hurt the most. If I shave my legs I need to do it probably every 2-3 days to be very smooth. Epilator is fine for a good week. Not as much has grown back. It takes longer to epilate though.
One thing that has not been mentioned here that is an issue with epilators is of ingrowing hairs.
Also, you should not use if you have varicose veins or diabetes.
A year or so ago one of the main companies was offering a 2 month trial/money back guarantee if you didn't like it.0 -
I don't find mine painful, but it never leaves my legs smooth. I can feel small bumps on my legs even though the hair is gone.

This is totally what puts me off this kind of system... although I'd LOVE reduced hair, slower growing, finer, etc etc etc! I can't even wax - I have a chronic ingrowing hair problem... even sometimes when I've shaved.
If anyone has any brilliant ideas about how to reduce them, I'll love them forever! My TV is broken!
Edit: refunded £515 for TV 1.5 years out of warranty - thank you Sale of Goods Act! :j0 -

Thats why you need to exfolliate. This may sound drastic, but you know those pot scourer things that have a piece of sponge inside what looks like some chain mail type stuff? If you use one of those with lots and lots of shower gel or soap, use it very gently, fantastic results! gets rid of any ingrown hairs and is great for pre-tanning tooyou'll be smooth as the proverbial baby's bum
and no need to pay out for so called exfolliating scrubs as they can be used time and time again.

I would love anyone who can help too!
Yes I get the bump things aswell.
Mine is a Philips one, it is pink - can't remember its name, no light though, though the £45 was in the sale.0 -
I know someone who got bumps. Mine is fine though.
As for ingrowing hairs, all you can do is exfoliate a lot and maybe alternate between shaving and expilating.0 -
I have used an epilator for years and find that I only need to depilate my legs once every 3 weeks. Most of my friends get their legs waxed at a salon and I can´t believe how much money they spend on that. IMO an epilator is definitely a money saving device.
Like frivoulous_fairy, I too have had problems with ingrowing hairs, therefore exfoliate regularly, which helps but hasn´t got rid of the problem completely, but I have just seen voddyvix´s suggestion to use a scouring pad so I think I will give myself a good scouring to save money on exfoliating gels.0 -
I have recently been prescribed a cream from my GP and after 2 weeks I can already notice a difference. It's new (apparently) and called Vaniqa or Eflornithine 11.5%. Downside is that it can cause spots (although I haven't) but my face is very very dry but nothing that a bit of moisturiser doesn't cure.
I had thought about LHR but since trying this cream I don't think I'll need too!
:heartpuls CG :heartpulsEver wonder about those people who spend £2 apiece on those little bottles of Evian water? Try spelling Evian backward.0
