  • I have read this thread and just thought i'd tell people my experiences. I suffered from severe period pains very irregular perriods, terrible mood swings, clinical deppression, have been over weight for many years and have quite noticable facial hair.

Although suffering for much longer, I was actually diagnosed 3 1/2 years ago. Got married and wanted to start a family, put weight on due to deppression and quickly got to 20 stone! Tried clomid to no evail, went on metformin and lost 10 stone!! Ended up in hospital malnutrisioned and had too put some weight back on, as I ''wasn't built to be 10 stone''.

Eventually sent for lap and dye which hubby was told would be about half an hour of a job, but returned about 4 and a half hours later with a lot more insitions than the two they said there would be. For my consultants understoody to come and sit on the end of the bed and say that both my tubes were completeley blocked and they'd done all they could, it was probably because I have crohn's disease, and we would not be having any kids of our own naturally.

There was no need for us to go back to the womens outpatients and he'd refer us for IVF, for which we were grateful! That was 8 months ago we had some dissisions as to weather we wanted to foster or go for IVF(fostering had been considered for a long while before this news) but we are only late 20's well nearly 30! And are currently on the IVF waiting list which is approximately 3 years which we have been on since april and it seems like a lifetime ago! We long to have children but cannot afford to go private, so are waiting patiently! (And still trying!! Well you never know!).

Any way what I was getting too was, don't give up on the laser treatment required for your daughter, could this be changed by something like changing your GP? Thus being in a different postcode! Just thought this may be worth looking into as I know from experience with my crohns that different areas have completely different allowances for thing such as waiting lists and unlicensed drugs and funding for such treatments. Obviously you have to live reasonably close but it may be worth phoning around the GP'S in your area to see if they can be of any help!

Sorry for going on but I hop this helps in some way!!;)
I love bargains but freebies are better!! ;-)
  • I'm having my back and shoulder hair removed by laser next month and it's going to take about two hours. I'm a wimp and the test patch really hurt! They recommend taking paracetamol and ibuprofen beforehand. I would be interested to know if anyone has any better ways to relieve the pain! A few pints of stong beer would probably do the trick but any sensible ideas would be much appreciated!

    Thanks in anticipation!

It shouldn't 'really hurt', certainly not anything like as bad as waxing, although there will be occasional patches that hurt where the hair is a bit too long. If you find it that painful, it might be worth looking at other methods. There are different types of laser hair removal, and another one may suit you better.

You can also ask them to turn the intensity of the pulse down. Though that may mean you will need more sessions in the long run.
When I had my loft converted back into a loft, the neighbours came around and scoffed, and called me retro.
  • OK I'm exaggerating but the test patch did hurt and I'm not looking forward to 2 hours of it! And I don't want more than one session!

I've been going for over a year for hair removal on different parts of the body and it doesn't hurt at all. But pain threshholds vary.

The lady who does mine started off at 50% strength to see how I reacted, but went up to 80-90% (depending on where it was). Shw always uses very cold ice packs to numb the area first - make sure you get this option (uncomfortable in the winter, but worth it).

However, I would be surprised if you get rid of all hair in one session. I've been told thta effectiveness of removal depends on stage of growth each hair is at.

By the way - when I get home I always put aloe vera gel (kept in the fridge) on the area treated. This really cools it off quickly and prevents further problems.
  • It didn't hurt at first but it felt like it was burning towards the end - maybe I should have said something! The laser blows cold air which is supposed to help. I'm not looking for anywhere near hair-free - just want to look less of a gorilla!

If you can bear to do it (and can find the privacy!) you should check out the advice on some male to female transsexual advice sites! This isn't a joke really! As they have to undergo a large number of hair removal treatments to complete their transformation, they have loads of good tried and tested tips to minimise the discomfort. Different things work for different people so it is to an extent trial and error as to what works for you. I came across some of them when looking for tips to minimise the discomfort of electrolysis (I am not a transsexual by the way!) and thought these bits of the sites were great! There were far too many ideas to try to post them here.

hi there, just wondered if any one had any experience of this and any recommendations, what to avoid and be careful of, costs involved etc.
would it be detrimental in the long run?
    are there any side effectgs

    any info would be welcome

mainly for upper lip, facial etc
    Nice to save.
  • Hiya

I've had laser hair removal performed and personally, I am extremely pleased. I did lots of research (mainly for the cheapest prices as it's hard to find genuine people who will give you an honest opinion about a particular clinic) and I found somewhere that is by far the cheapest in the South East of England. Funnily enough it's in London!

I think there are various types of laser that can be used; it all depends on your skin colour and hair colour. I use something called 'cool glide' which the place I go to says needs to be used 5-8 times to be effective, although I've done the bottom hair of my legs twice and I reckon I only need it once, at the most, twice more there for my legs to be as smooth as a baby's bum and for hair to 99% never grow back!

I'm planning to have it done EVERYWHERE (and yes, I mean everywhere, lol) as I can't stand to see hair on my body - I love being silky smooth. I've had my face done once...the upper lip was a bit of a killer, but it only takes a minute so be strong, it's worth it.

For example of price, full face costs 90 pounds a time, but as I said, how many times you need to have it done depends entirely on your hair growth. For the last three years I've not let a razor come anywhere near my body, only waxed, so I think that has been a factor of the laser being so successful with me.

If you do decide to have it done, the area you get treated can only be shaved in the future. So no more waxing or plucking as this will pull the hair from the root which'll take time for the folicle to grow back. Because folicles grow back at different, random times from each other, you'd be wasting your money as only a small percentage of hairs will be affected by the laser.

    Hope this helps.
