I have used an epilator for years, much better than shaving or waxing...I think your pain threshold increases with regular use....
just be careful if you are doing any "personal areas"....that the skin doesnt get caught.....:o0 -
I use one and like it - no need for an ice pack thingy. With the bumps and ingrowing hairs would that depend on whether you are dark or blond? Just a thought. My friend is dark (parents came from Greece) and I am fair she complains about hair where she does not want it but if I look (well I have to look close and hard for a long time) I can see just as much hair on me but it is just not obvious.0

I use an epilator, I don't find it painful if you use it regularly. I wouldn't bother with the ice one, it would just be colder on the skin. I am fair and it lasts about 3 weeks. I exfoliate and moisturise regularly as well.A bargain is something you don't need at a price you can't resist :j0

I have a love/hate relationship with my epilator, I love the smoothness it gives you but obviously don't like the pain, if left for a while its like doing it for the first time but in some ways the pain is sort of okay (I must be turning into some sado mac-whatever!)
Bought a new babyliss one for £10 from Netto last week, so that was good value. If you don't have something nice to say don't bother saying anything at all.0 -
For ingrowing hairs there are two solutions, the first is the brand named "tend skin" available from some pharmacies... you spray this on regularly and it stops them. And it really does. The second option is a lot more moneysaving... the main ingredient of tend skin is aspirin. You can use some soluble aspirin dissolved in a little water, dab it on with cotton wool. You don't just do this when you epilate though, you do it every single day. It also stops razor burn.Softstuff- Officially better than 0070

Personally, you couldn't pay me to use one of them....I tried, I really did, but I just can't put myself through the pain. I'll stick with waxing, at least it's quicker and someone else has to rip the hairs out...what can I say, I'm a coward.
On a related note though, apparently women will have a lower pain threshold for one week in the month, so not a good idea to go ripping hairs out then, especially if you're not used to itLead me not into temptation - I can find it perfectly well all by myself0 -
Not sure if youve already bought one but noticed in the new Argos catalogue the Philips epilators have a 90 day satisfaction guarantee so think that means if you can't bear the pain they will refund your money. I think it's a Philips thing, rather than Argos. Obviously check the terms and conditions but might be worth looking into.:pBooo!!!0

Good discussion thread! Some tips for newbie epilator people:
- get a waxing first, then start afterwards. Then you won't be ripping them all out at once!
- do regularly
- I think I have sensitive skin, my legs stay blotchy for a whole 24 hours after epilating!!
As for the red bumps, I get loads of those and ingrown hairsAs for bikini line, mine bleeds if I use epilator and yes i have had it waxed many a time and exfoliated. I just think I have oober horrible hairs. Bleurgh, hate the things.
I'm tempted by paying for laser treatement because if you work out what you pay in your lifetime for hairremoval it could add up to the same thing.
Someone mentioned buying scourers for epilating, but I'm not sure of the ones you mean! Could someone please put a link in so I don't buy the wrong thing!!
BTW, anyone ever found a cheap alternative to bleaching?

i think that epilators thse days aren't as viscious as they used to be.
most people i know who say they used it once and never again hadn't tried once recently (in the last ocuple of years) and i think they're so much better these days.
and TBH the ice pack makes no difference. just grin and bear it if necessary0
