What to do with an elderly who refuses help.

  • Hi pink68: for your reliable gardener maybe try the parish council for your area. my mum had the retired parks groundsman come and do her lawn etc.
If they work for the council and doing things like sports fields where kids play these people should be CRB checked.

Also you could try and find out if this charity can point you in the right direction:http://www.careandrepair-england.org.uk .

Some learning disability charities support people into employment by giving them jobs such as gardening and they would come along with a support worker, again the council should know what they fund in that field.

hope that helps and good luck. I've only read a couple of posts on the thread but hope things get settled: my mum's had a very compliant mother go in a home and even that's been no plain sailing to sort out. I'm not looking forward to when mum loses her independence as she will be the opposite. The poor carers will be eating their heads!

She will be entitled to free chiropody on the NHS and her GP is the person to organise this. My great-aunt got this at home until she went into a care home and it continues there. The staff aren't allowed to cut nails at all.

My Grandad is a diabetic and also entitled to this, however entitled doesn't mean he got it, waiting lists years long even for someone with priority, so he uses his AA money to pay for the service privately.

My relative isn't even a diabetic just elderly. The waiting list in some areas can be long but once you get the first appointment then you are in the system and will be seen when deemed appropriate. Did he take his name off the waiting list?
Lost my soulmate so life is empty.

I can bear pain myself, he said softly, but I couldna bear yours. That would take more strength than I have -

Well they waited for about 2 years before deciding, through a combination of enough was enough and Aunt not being able any more to physically do his nails, and then went private.

As you say, waiting lists vary so i'm afraid not everyone is as lucky as in your area.

Also in my experience it tends to be "when resources allow" and not "when deemed appropriate".

So better all round he can go private because then at least he can get his feet seen to when they need, and not when there is a space.

    Thanks for all your thoughts.

Gran receives attendance allowance and it is just accruing in the bank at the moment so i think maybe its time she started using it for what its for! I will phone the GP though in the week and ask what the chances of her getting it free are.

As for the gardener think we've come up with someone for that too. Was chatting to hubby about some i'd looked at online who also do a bit of handyman stuff (which at the moment me and hubby do for her) and he had a lightbulb moment about a contractor he uses at work and has known for years.

Just hope she doesnt tell them to sling their hooks too!

Thank you all for your help this week, it's been great to know i'm not alone and to hear other tales of beligerent oldies, it can all feel a bit isolating at times but i see now how many of us their are!

Good for him. This is the kind of thing that AA is meant to be for.

The problem with all the gardeners at present is the weather. All the ones I know of locally are playing catch-up and trying to keep their appointments. I don't mind the hay-meadow at the back so long as I can get to hang a bit of washing out, but I don't like the front looking so neglected. It's growing a fine crop of oil-seed rape at present! Hopefully our gardener will be able to come on Tuesday as planned - the previous 2 Tuesdays she couldn't make it because of heavy downpours.
