Wow, just saw some of the posts on the first page from 2007 - talk of 5-6% !! I wish that were still the case. This years rates seem particularly low (although I've only been saving about 3 years...)
Yeah I think I was getting 4.2% on my first really basic savings account around 2006. I'm sure it was nowhere near the best rate.

I think they 'peaked' (in recent times) in September 2008, when the banks were desperate for funds. I remember getting 7.32% on my NatWest ISA. Best of all, it accepted transfers in. :D

Obviously it couldn't last, and RBS nearly folded shortly after. And the rest, as they say, is history!

I fixed all my Cash ISAs that I had in July 2009 for 5 years with Newcastle BS at a whopping 5%. As a bonus the account also offers penalty-free access at 30 days' notice, but I'm pleased to say the need has not arisen to raid it. Prior to that I also had the Natwest 7.32% ISA referred to by YorkshireBoy, which dwindled quickly as rates plummeted with the financial crisis.

I'm hoping that by the time the Newcastle BS ISA matures next July rates would have improved from current levels, but I'm not holding my breath.

So now things seem to be quite limited in ones that allow transfers in. Thinking of just going down to my local Barclays, where I can get 2.2%. At least it's easy, and the best I can find otherwise is Cheshire at
    2.3%

I have a fixed ISA with a large deposit that I was going to transer to the Santander Major ISA. This has been withdrawn. What are the disadvantages of opening the 123 version and taking out the 123 credit card apart from the £24 annual fee? Would I pay anything else on the card if I do not use it? Could I then cancel the credit card and keep the ISA? Are there any better rates available?

First you dont have to have the Credit Card. The a/c cost of £2 per month would easily be offset if just transfer a couple of DD for appropriate payment .

Also pays up to 3% interest.

    Cheers

I did not want to move any direct debits which are required for the current account. At present I do not even have two fully set up to transfer. I would also need to keep transferring in £500 a month which I could do and then transfer back out again but that would be more hassle. I though the credit card might be easier. I only want the ISA.
