Hi everyone, I have just come out of hospital today ,I have decided that I have to lose a lot of weight,I am 97kilos,while in hospital all the medical staff kept telling me I was morbidley obese and I need to lose weight,I am 5ft 4" and should weigh about 9 stone,I had my thyroid gland removed 18 months ago and since then my weight has gone up,the doctors have told me I will have to try 3 times harder than anyone else to lose weight, maybe I should just eat vegetables and fruit and a multi vitamin tablet each day and see how I go,unless anyone else can help me.
Well, the first thing to do if you are morbidly obese and/or have other medical problems is to see your GP and ask for help. Especially ask if there is an 'Exercise on prescription' scheme.

I am convinced that losing weight and keeping it off requires a combination of eating less and moving more. Now, in your situation it's not a good plan to start jogging or going to a top level aerobics class three times a week. But if you can walk, then do that. Not 10 miles a day, start doing small comfortable distances at a comfortable speed for you and build up. See Walking the Way to Health website for ideas and to check whether there's a local walking group near you.

As for what you eat, it's not a particulary good plan to change your diet to just fruit and veg, especially not overnight. It's like radical moneysaving, you'll get fed up and start treating yourself. You could just eat less than you do now, and consider whether what you are eating needs to change. If you currently live on fried foods and ready meals, then your diet is almost certainly too high in salt, sugar and fat, which is likely to make almost any medical problem worse. So gradually change that: porridge for breakfast is excellent for keeping you going till lunchtime. Instead of a ready meal, think of a simple meal you could cook yourself. There's lots of ideas and support on the Old Style board if you haven't yet found that!

Fruit and veg are very good instead of biscuits etc as snacks, but they don't alone make up a healthy diet, even with a vitamin supplement.

Also think whether you're the kind of person who would benefit from a club like WeightWatchers or Slimming World, and whether you want to follow a clear "Eat this today and that tomorrow" kind of plan. Personally I think long-term it's better to adopt generally sensible eating habits, so that you don't come to a day when you're supposed to eat prawn salad for lunch but you can't because you've gone out with work and it's not on the menu and even if it was it's covered in calorie laden dressing which ISN'T on your plan, and think "Blown it, might as well eat myself silly for the rest of the week!" Which I think is the way both WW and SW are these days - ie change to good eating habits rather than "eat this today and that tomorrow" - plus you might like the support of a weekly meeting.

I wish! If you look at the first page of this topic, you'll see all sort of sensible suggestions from me! But I came out of hospital three months ago, had a short time on steroids and ballooned! Struggling to lose it, if I keep re-typing what I KNOW I ought to be doing, it should be easier to remember to do it next time I pass the biscuit tin ...

    All the best!

savvy-sue,thankyou very much for taking the time to reply, starting tomorrow I will be taking our dogs for a short walk,I thought maybe a 15 min walk twice a day and then increase it a bit at a time,I am going to follow your suggestion about porridge for breakfast, and maybe grilled chicken and salad for lunch and something lowcal for my evening meal, I dont eat biscuits or crisp I think my problem is portion control,I think I will go and buy a small dinner plate and try and fool my eyes into thinking I have a lot of food on my plate.

frosty that all sounds very sensible. And since it sounds as if you don't live alone, enlist the rest of the household in helping you: NOT serving huge portions, coming for walks with you and the dog, etc etc etc!

Another thought for Frosty and others whose preferred method of moving more is walking - get a pedometer! Don't know if there are still any freebies on offer, but I love mine. I've done 7345 steps so far today, which is a lot more than I've managed earlier in the week, even if it's not the recommended 10,000 (which you should be working up to rather than aiming to achieve on day 1!)

*creeps back into the thread sheepishly*

Hey folks! Been working away for a couple of weeks which was fun, but bad bad baaaaad for my eating! As I was studying up for 4 exams I was also eating lots of sugary types of foods - hotel made fresh chocolate chip biscuits each afternoon for tea break and the lunches weren't that great for diets either, but I didn't stint myself and when I was home at the weekends I also thought 'what the heck' and had a few take aways - as such I put on 9lbs of that hard fought weight loss over the 2 and a half weeks, but I have to admit I did enjoy the food!

Will be away for work again next week at a hotel studying up for the last exam for a while but will try to be better this time around and pre-ask the hotel for a jacket and salad for lunch each day! Have to win back some of that lost ground before C-Day!

SW password for this week is spinach.

    Hi girls

I need to join you  In Jan 04 I joined S/W and lost almost 2 stone and was v happy! :D As is usual, the 2 stone has managed to find it's way home all but a few pounds. OH and I did join together a few months back but it was expensive paying for 2 each week and it tailed off. I'm not planning to rejoin (unless I feel the need) but will keep a track online. I have to say I'm not really feeling in the right frame of mind (how do I change that?) When I started before I had a couple of hypnotherapy sessions and a colonic irrigation before I started and I lost every single week and was soooo focused. Hmmmmm...maybe time for another colonic  lol

    Good Luck girls!

Petal, I find just chatting on here really helps. It's the only place I can be honest about my weight. Maybe this will help you out too. i think seeing my weight written down on here keeps me in focus!

  • Wow... I have just read about thirty pages of this thread - read all of your messages and it has made me a little teary! It makes me sad that I am so fat and just wish desperately that I would get off my lazy and un-motivated !!!!!! and do something about it. Its a vicious circle though - the worse I feel, the more I eat, the more I eat, the worse I feel. I just need to break the loop! I don't want to do crazy fad diets but I just feel like if I was given the chance to be a healthy weight then I'd maintain it. I am lazy and impatient. If I don't see instant results then it is a big fat burger and chocolate bar for me.

I sound like a right whingey old bird, I really don't want to, but at the same time, its kinda nice that there are some people out there that I don't know, that I can talk to about my weight.

I have heard about this diabetic diet and am wondering if it might be worth doing it for a week to just get the weight loss started. But then there is always an excuse - the dinner on friday or the party next weekend.... I am sure that if I wasn't so lazy when it came to everything, including food prep I'd be better but I just can't be arsed!!! And at nearly 12 stone I should be arsed. I have put on about 1/2 stone in 4 months and know that if I carry on this way I will end up in a situation where its even harder to sort it out. But at the same time I can't put two and two together; eating + no exercise = fat. This is not a sum that makes sense in my head.

    Help!!!!!!!!!!!!!
