    Hello Binxy, and welcome!

First things, I'd say eating less needs to be combined with moving more, and before you say you can't, I'm not talking every day down at the gym, I'm talking getting up to change the channel on the TV rather than using the remote if that's as far as you can get to begin with! See if you can get a cheap step counter / pedometer, and surprise yourself with how many steps you walk around the house, then try to increase it by a little every day. If you can get out for a five minute walk every day to begin with, even that's good! If you can't even do that, swing your arms around!

But I'd also go and see your GP: what can be done about your walking difficulties? You sound so fed up: are you depressed? Can your GP help with that? Don't settle for 'go away and lose weight': ask about 'exercise on prescription' (search this thread for details, we think it's available nationwide), seeing a dietician, short-term pain relief to get you moving, physiotherapy etc.

You've done really well to give up smoking: that alone will have improved your health, so give yourself a big pat on the back for that.

And although I'm not a great one for doing stuff to my hair - we have reached an agreement now that I'll wear it in the style to which it would like to become accustomed, and in return it won't cause me grief by not doing what I want it to do because it just doesn't do that! - you don't have to live with grey hair, do you?

PS: I started thinking, and put your vital stats into the BBC BMI (Body Mass Index) calculator, and you're not actually overweight. At 9 stone you were at the bottom of the healthy range, and now you're heading towards the top. Which with giving up smoking is not, I believe, unusual.

So as long as you don't keep piling on the pounds, it's how you feel about yourself that's the problem. But it may be your other health problems are getting in the way of feeling better about yourself. You might lose weight, and feel no better. Am I making sense?

    Gotta go ...

    Thanks for your answer, savvy_sue.

Unfortunately, I've explored every avenue (and doctor, and consultant) with my disability, and not only does no one know what caused it or what it really is, I can't cure it. I can't help it with pain killers either as if they are strong enough to work they make me a zombie, and less strong ones don't begin to touch it.

Basically my pelvis doesn't hold together right and I get severe pains around my lower back and sacroiliac joints. Walking more than a few feet is extermely painful if not impossible.

The stopping smoking made me gain weight, but mostly it was medication and lack of moevement that made me gain 2 stone in 2 months. I went from a size 12 to a large 16 so fast, I grew out of my size 12 jeans and couldn't believe 14 didn't fit, I had jumped right to a 16.

I'm rambling, sorry. Yes I think I am depressed. I've been battling it for a while now. I don't take antidepressants as they either don't work or make things worse.

As for the grey hair, well I stopped hennaing my hair when the root growth was so obvious. It looks good for maybe 2 weeks after I colour it, only for a huge streak of white/grey to appear at my parting. And who has the money for root dying very fortnight?

I hate to whinge, I'm sorry for coming across so defeatist. But that's my state of mind and unfortunately the state of my life right now. Thank you for you advice, I will try and move more. I think I'm the type of person that wants big resutls and fast. Being patient was never my strong point. I just don't think I'll ever lose this weight, and it's getting to me.

edit to reply to PS - yes fortunately my BMI is still normal. But trust me, I look very out of proportion and more than a little "chunky". I should think I do have issues with self esteem for reasons I can't go into really.

Hi Binxy....I know a little of how you feel. My weight is really getting me down too. Put on 5 stone in three years which is not good as I have a 33 year old hip replacement. I am always going to 'start tomorrow' but tomorrow hasn't arrived yet! I also gave up smoking a couple of years ago which doesn't help the weight issue. However, I am thrilled not to be addicted to those poisonous little white sticks anymore.
With regards to your pelvis....have you tried a Chiropractor? I found them brilliant when I had severe back problems.
Cycling is another good form of exercise when you have trouble weight-bearing. I can't manage a two wheeler, but my other half very kindly bought me a folding tricycle so we are starting to go out for bike rides now. Fingers crossed the exercise will kick start my metabolism.
    Good Luck and keep trying!

OK, have found some links to exercises which can be done SITTING DOWN! (Thank you Readers' Digest!) Which, if they do nothing else, look as if they'll keep us all more flexible from the hours we spend online ...

Desk Exercises - written tips from the British Library, with stick figure illustrations, mostly breathing and relaxation.
Ten Ways to Exercise at your Desk - written tips from an American Personal Trainer and Exercise Physiologist. The exercises look sane enough, but the photo on the home page is pretty scary ...
    Exercise at your Desk videos
    - my particular favourite, the voiceover is unoffensively American, and the model is not wearing lycra but office clothes! She is also clearly in need of the exercise, and demonstrates the breathing with excellent goldfish qualities. There is a sitting and a standing section.

Binxy, clearly you'll have to think carefully about what movements you can and can't make, but hopefully some of these will be helpful.

  • Dear Binxy, I know how you feel, at the beginning of summer I felt the same, sore thighs, sore back, sore head... I was beginning to look through the Saga Holiday brochures thinking old age had come early, but one sunny day I just woke up and thought ENOUGH!! I bought a second hand bike, got a padded seat (would have given up after one day if I hadn't) and made myself go out every second day, even if just for 20 mins.

I got myself an old Rosemary Conley video from a charity shop and did some of the hip & thigh exercises, that might be difficult in your position but buy a few, they are only £1 a time and you might see something you can do. Again, I was struggling at first but I made myself do that 3 times a week for 20 mins a time - honest it does get easier.

Finally, a pal of mine started following the You are What you Eat (Scottish woman off Channel 4, Dr Gillian McKeith) recipe book (free hired from library) and although it's time consuming preparing the veg & stuff, the weight is eventually coming off and you can eat quite a lot. The food's not to everyone's taste but there are so many soups & salads to choose from I'm sure you'll find something you like.

Combine all of the above and voila (me? Lost about 8lbs in around 2 months, not massive, but I know it will stay off cos I've worked my dam butt off). Back to what I was about 2 years ago (gave up smoking too!) and I can't tell you how happy I am. I don't hate myself any more. Clothes not tight any more.

I'm sure you've heard this a million times, as I have, but tomorrow is the first day in the start of the rest of your life. You must want to do it and you have to find the right day to start, but start you must or, you know yourself, you will just free fall and it will be a nightmare getting back on track again.

As Savvy Sue says, MOVE as much as possible, housework, making those veggie recipes, cleaning cupboards etc. ANYTHING to break the chain and stop you thinking of eating.

By the way, I am totally grey but won't give a hairdresser fifty quid every month to dye my re-growth but discovered that the local beauty & hairdressing college need models and you only pay a fraction of the cost. It's all supervised and they use quality products, like Wella etc.

I sincerely wish you the best of luck. It can be done, you just need to tell yourself you can do it.

Hey folks, some great advice from people on here as usual :)

I went to club tonight and lost 2.5lb this week - so I got my 1 stone sticker!! ;D OK , so I know it is only a shiny sticker but it makes me proud to have it stuck on the front of my book - amazing how motivational a cheap little sticky shiny paper is!

My running total (or perhaps I should say walking slowly seeing as it is taking so long to come off...) is now 1 stone 1 lb lost. Aiming for 2lbs next week so we'll see how I get on with that!

*bounces along happy as a happy thing*

This weeks password is 'carrot'. Good luck everyone and hope you have as good news as I had tonight :)

Nice loss jenpoptab :) It's easy to slip up a little if you know you won't be weighing in for a week, so you did well to keep your healthy eating going through that temptation!

I wonder how everyone else did this week?
