Has anyone watched Doomsday Preppers on Discovery?...Now they take hoarding to the extremes!!
  • The thing with the clothing by kilo is - don't wait for it to be perfect - taking it in 2 batches gets the same result as one big batch, just a bit more petrol but perhaps a bit of breathing space while you muster up bag no 2
You never know how far-reaching something good, that you may do or say today, may affect the lives of others tomorrow
  • hello! I have a room- The "middle room" aka The room of doom is allegedly mine. It used to be the "playroom" but most kids too old for that now so only little un uses it when shes home so a corner of the room has her toys, dollshouse, play kitchen. It has a sofa, an old table (my desk) my shelves and a unit full of work stuff. My sewing stuff is also in there but untouched for months. :(
It doesnt feel relaxing and "mine". Probably cos its full of work stuff? It now also has my power plate in there which feels good- I call it "Uncle Bryns Gym" after that episode of Gavin and Stacey where Bryn turns his spare room into a gym?..............anyway *ahem*
I have bought a lovely new lampshade/fitting to go in there but am being rubbish about getting a sparky in to fit it!

De-richarding is happening slowly and steadily. I had a bash at the cookbooks yesterday and have arranged to recycle 4 old mobiles today (£76 in the bank too from that one) The kids break up tomorrow so I am hoping the weather is lousy for half term so we can just hang out! They can watch films and recouperate (all 4 are knacked and therefore FOUL) at the mo and I can de-richard with no time limits (currently have a school run at 8.40. 12.45 and 3.30) so it makes getting a good few hours hard.
The clothes are on the list for this week. I have maintained my weight for 18 months- I lost 5 stone prior to that. I would like to lose another stone to get me into a true 12 not a 12/14 but im not *that* bothered, TBH! I do, however have a clothes mountain of shame. I have at least 2 handbags that can go on ebay and will probably both get over £20. My last ebay lot made £250 so that was REALLY inspiring to get listing more!
I am going to endevour to catch up now before soggy school run...........

:o When I looked at my shorn locks on the hairdressers floor yesterday I felt the urge to gather them up and bring them home. I did nothing of the sort, of course, but it's worrying to even want to.

When I cut OH, DD's and DS's hair I put the clippings either in the compost or in a net bag for the birds to use as nesting material, if it's the right time of year. And the same with the combings from the cats. Useful bit of recycling and apparently the human smell discourages rats from nesting in the compost.

Hi all, been lurking as I felt my motivation going again but had a really productive evening last night. We have our 6-monthly estate agent inspection next Monday and I felt swamped by how much there was to do in preparation.

Set myself a time limit of an hour and a half to see how much I could do and I completely blitzed the spare room and got all my clothes put away in my bedroom. It looks so much better - I just wish I had taken before and after photos.

Feel much more positive now and ready to tackle the rest of the house. Sometimes a deadline can be motivating when you are feeling completely overwhelmed.

Had an interesting chat with my sister at the weekend and she stockpiles food as well. We both said we try and run down our stocks and then get panicky that we are getting too low so go and stock up again. Definitely a work in progress!

Hmm, just thinking about it and when I am feeling low / de-motivated that's exactly when I should be posting and not lurking. Although at least by lurking I am reading about your successes, stories, reasons and support for each other and it keeps me going. But I really should make myself fess up here when I am struggling.

Part of my self-esteem issues I guess that I don't want to be a burden or that no-one is interested in me / what I have to say.

Thank you all for keeping me going when I struggle, even if you don't realise it x

I can get less done weekdays because of my lack of vigour. :o. And ATM weekends are full of DIY or essential stuff for the critters. But if I get out of the habit of thinking about the junk I am scared I will stop trying to solve the problem altogether. So I hang on in here,:D
  • Evening All,
I have not posted in ages but have been following the thread with interest. Since the Autumn term started at school, we have been OFSTEDed and straight after that my Mum came to stay... for 3 weeks! I love her dearly and realise that I am very lucky to have her in my life BUT my goodness, 3 weeks is a very long time! Anyway, what that means is that all de-hoarding has been put on hold for a while :o. Mum goes back home tomorrow and I break up for the half-term holiday on Friday. The freaky thing is that I really CAN'T WAIT to get back into my de-cluttering:rotfl:and I never thought I would ever say that! Mum really noticed how much clearer things are already:T and I am hopeful that I may have inspired her to do the same when she gets home!

I will have some more coal and logs delivered in the holiday but they are stored in the garden, so it SHOULD be a case of clearing the lounge properly, re-washing all of the crockery and cutlery etc (Mum tries but her eye-sight is getting worse and I have had to ignore most of what she has "helped with"), catching up with the general washing, scrubbing etc THEN get de-richarding again!!!!! That is assuming I don't come down with the latest LURGY that is doing the rounds, just in time for the holiday :(.

So, keep up the good work everybody, all of the posts are helpful and every success should be celebrated!

    I think they have, Spike.

But the ones on TV, although they may have a rather - tenuous grasp upon reality (the one wandering through the alleyways of Vegas dressed in little more than knickers and bra plus backpack because, basically, her boyfriend's convinced her to do it springs to mind - she wouldn't last more than a couple of blocks before getting zombied, IMO) - are, at least, generally clean hoarders.

It's a crying shame to think of hundreds of thousands of dollars' worth of food collecting dust that could have been spent on their children's educations and actually on living rather than planning for imminent death.

I'll bet there are more people living in squalor insisting that they are doing exactly the same preparation, when they are actually deluding themselves and just hanging onto every last bit of junk, rubbish and crap for fear they throw away the one thing that will save them in the event of the world ending - as per Shaun of the Dead and the LP collection as the zombie girl approaches -

Do try and post when you are struggling - perhaps try and think of it as how much you will be helping someone else who is struggling but feels so down can't post. Everyone here who has posted about their difficulties with hording and the reasons behind it have helped many others:T.
You are not a burden, you are another wonderful contributer on this thread that collectively is making a difference to people's lives.
I don'talways have the energy to respond, but someone on here generally will if someone is having a bad day:T.
And well done for even posting this one and mentioning how you feel sometimes:T
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days attack me at once
