With that you pay £4.99 per month for unlimited local and national calls. You have to be a nildram subscriber, though.
Which, of course, if very good value (even when compared with calls for 2p each from a BT line using 18866) if you make more than 8 calls a day, every day (and don't mind paying for those 'inclusive' calls even when you don't make them while you're away on holiday).
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.
  • I wonder if anyone can tell me if I call still sign up for call 18866 and call 1899 if I'm already with another Carrier Pre-Select company (justdialsaver). Will I need to cancel my agreement with them first?

    Many thanks

You wouldn't be signing up for "another" carrier pre-select as 18866/1899 aren't CPS services. On each call, you need to dial 18866 or 1899 (as appropriate) and the national or international code, even for local calls.

However, it doesn't matter if you have CPS with any other company, you can still dial 18866 or 1899 ... or even 1280 to route the call via BT!

I'm on CPS with OneTel so, if I don't dial a prefix, my calls go out via them and they bill be.

However, I'm signed up with 1899 and 18866 and use those prefixes for the majority of my calls.

I suppose it just depends whether your CPS company allows, like OneTel does, you to use other call providers.

BTW, they've made an error in their FAQs which you might be able to exploit to get free UK 01/02 calls of up to 2 hours at all times if you're on their Just Dial Saver Light (no monthly fee) tariff.

    The FAQ reads:
What sorts of calls are included in the free minutes?

All your calls to local and national landlines in the evenings and at weekends (daytimes for Just Dial Saver Lite). Note that this excludes calls to mobiles, premium rate numbers, international destinations and directory enquiries, all non-voice calls and non-geographical number (e.g. those starting with 0845 or 0870).

Providing you always pay your line rental to BT, it doesn't matter which company you use as your CPS provider, they have to allow access to other providers like Call18866/1899, etc and can't stop you.

If, however, you choose to pay line rental to another company other than BT then they can, if they wished, block access to cheaper call providers like Call18866/1899, etc.

You can only use one CPS company at a time so therefore you couldn't use both TalkTalk & OneTel at the same time unless either of them allowed you to access their network via their own indirect access codes.
  • I have just seen the following on another website - is this a good deal?

"I thought this might help anyone else who is changing provider Carphone Warehouse are combining Broadband with Talk 1, 2 or 3 (so BT no longer provide line rental either) for this month all at the same price of £19.99 512kbps or £24.99 1mb this covers unlimited internet access plus unlimited anytime calls to any Uk landline anytime plus 20% discount on mobile and international calls. Seems a bargain!"

I presently use PIPEX for broadband, Tele2 for phone calls and BT for rental.

My broadband costs £23.99pm which will be upgraded from 576kps to 2Mbs shortly for no additional monthly cost. But wanting to move to a cheaper 2Mbs system @ £19.99pm PIPEX want to charge me £58.75 to switch - this will take me nearly 18 mths to recover.

Any ideas on where to move to would be greatly appreciated. I would add that I have been with PIPEX for over 3 years and they have been first class up to now.

    Cheers jack.

Not quite sure where the bit about BT no longer providing the line rental comes from as you do still have to pay BT £10.50 per month by dd for line rental.
  • Tiscali are now permitting upgrades for present customers to 2.3mb broadband for £15.99 per month. Add £10.50 for the BT line rental and use Talk Talk from carphone warehouse as your CPS and call18866 for non talk talk landlines and call1899 for calls to mobiles and your total coms bill will be £26.49 plus pennies per month with excellent broadband connection. Works for me.....:-)
  • ***Yes it would be wrong, so I have edited out your post and would ask you to place any referrals on the Referral Board, thank you Board Guide.***

I registered with 18866 ages ago, and have been very happy.
I decided to also register with 1899 for calling mobiles and tried this evening and have just got a message back saying that my registration failed -
here is what the e-mail said:-

Unfortunately your 1899 internet registration has failed.

Due to lack of capacity it is currently not possible to register. Please wait at least 6 weeks before attempting to register again. Our apologies for the inconvenience.

    Kind regards,
    1899 Customer Services

............... so it would appear that we have been too successful in getting people to join up!!
Any ideas on how to get around this 6 week problem!!
    Thanks.
