.. and you're representing exactly whom ...?
Myself :P
With Martins help i've reclaimed PPI, saved on my insurance, discovered quidco, got the best mobile deal, had lots of free vouchers, moaned on the forums, laughed on the forums and moaned on the forums again.
The fact he has now sold his website is being used as an excuse to accuse him of being a sell out when by his own admission he is an internet marketeer!
Sour grapes anyone?0 -
£6.6M isn't real money?
I am saying in my first comment that overnight 59% of revenue has disappered.
Secondly - What makes the product so worthwhile?
Independence ? Credibility? One Man? The Traffic generated?
If these are damaged or lost.-What will be left?
Whatever happens it is a sound business move on behalf of ML-but whether it is the same on behalf of MS- only time will tell."if the state cannot find within itself a place for those who peacefully refuse to worship at its temples, then it’s the state that’s become extreme".Revd Dr Giles Fraser on Radio 4 20170 -

Ive only read a few posts and am very surprised how you are all attacking Martin.

I'm reminded of the line from the song "You can check out any time you like, but you can never leave"
The news saddens me. For some daft reason, I imagined Martin to be above making money, to be that rare person who sticks to his principles regardless of whether he loses out as a result. I don't blame him for wanting to profit, but it does make me think much less of him as a person.
Some of the strength - and therefore value - of MSE is in the forums. Yet none of us stand to gain financially from this deal. I guess we knew that when we signed up, when we posted, it was in the original terms. But knowing that Martin has become a millionaire on the basis of some of our work, kind sticks in my throat.
I, too, will be watching the site & the newsletters like a hawk to make sure no bias towards MS and against other comparison sites creeps in.
eta. Congrats on the baby, Martin & Lara. Did that news factor into your decision?:heartpuls Mrs Marleyboy :heartpuls

He's a sloppy journalist who (can't spell and) seems to think that he can get away with anything.
YET, you've posted 1900 times on his website. To repeat what others have said, requires education, to challenge it,requires brains!FEB GC/DIESEL £200/4 WEEKS0 -
Why are you all whining?
This has been a commercial site turning over millions for years.
If you hadn't noticed that well you should have been paying more attention.
I agree. But .............. though financial journalism and internet marketing was the inpetus, the 'boards' and huge numbers of people posting on every subject under the sun, whether by design or accident, made this site. They felt (wrongly) they were a community, a co-operative, a 'us-against-them' albeit a paternalistic one with Martin the site owner. I used to cringe at some of the sycophantic posts.
It is, and always was a business. Just a business. And yes, lots of people didn't appreciate that. Hence they feel 'sold out'. I've personally benefited from this site, particularly from the tecki and matched betting boards, so no complaints here. But I'm older and more cynical and regarded this place as a good tool, great source of information but a website - a business - no emotional attachment. Others however, did/do feel an attachment, felt they were part of an online community - hence the reaction to the realisation they were a mailing list and commercial fodder.

My goodness me there are a lot of green eyed monsters on this thread aren't there. So you've all taken advantage of the incredible hard work and dedication of one man (at first) and then as the site grew, those he employed and them you gripe and moan we he, quite rightly, earns a handsome reward for (more than) a decades worth of long hours and commitment. Typical tabloid British attitudes, build 'em up and knock 'em down.
Well done Martin & congratulations on the baby news too.0 -
Now I don't have a problem with Martin selling MSE. Like any businessman, you cash in your business when it's time.
However, what I do think is wrong is that Martin is trying to play this as though it's a good thing.
It is NOT a good thing for the users, simple as and I have lost a lot of respect for Martin to saying it was anything more than selling his business. It is not for the greater good for the site. It is not to help the users of the site. It is selling a profitable and growing business.
I most probably won't stop coming here as I enjoy the atmosphere and the users, however I do expect to see adverts popping up over the place and I have lost my respect for Martin to playing this out like it's something it's not.0 -
